The Indian Geological Department has issued a critical warning for Kodagu district, highlighting a high risk of severe landslides and floods due to ongoing heavy rainfall. The alert for August raises concerns of a potential disaster similar to past events.
According to a recent Geological Survey of India report, 104 areas in Kodagu are at significant risk, affecting 2,995 families who are being urged to evacuate their homes to avoid potential danger. This precautionary measure follows recent concerns over a significant earthquake in Kerala’s Wayanad, which has increased the risk in the region.
Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda has instructed the Kodagu district administration to strictly follow the Geological Survey’s recommendations. During his visit to the affected areas on July 31, Minister Gowda stressed the urgency of the situation and the need for immediate action.
Madikeri Nagar and Taluk are particularly vulnerable, with 47 areas receiving warnings for both floods and landslides. Notable locations under alert include Shakti Nagar, Navagram, Koyanadu, and Bhagamandal. Additionally, flood warnings are in effect for 56 areas such as Hanagalla, Urubetta, and Haleri. Virajpet and Ponnampet taluks also face risks, with 19 areas including Karadigode, Kondageri, and Ayyappabetta identified as high-risk zones.
District Collector Venkata Raja has convened a meeting with officials to prepare for the anticipated heavy rains and implement necessary precautions. Kodagu has historically faced severe floods and landslides in August, making this warning particularly concerning.
