After Fortune magazine revealed that social network X intended to release a TV app for Amazon and Samsung customers next week, entrepreneur Elon Musk announced that long-form videos would soon be accessible on smart televisions.
Some users of the platform were able to access an early version of video and voice calling in October of last year, following Musk’s announcement that he intended to transform it into a super app with peer-to-peer payments and messaging capabilities.
“Coming soon,” Musk said in a brief response on X to a user’s posting that the platform’s long-form videos could be watched directly on smart TVs.
Earlier, Fortune said the app could look similar to the TV app offered by Google’s Youtube. It cited an unidentified source as saying Musk was set on competing with YouTube.
When Reuters asked X for more information about the app, X did not immediately reply.
X has been forming alliances with people like former CNN anchor Don Lemon and Fox pundit Tucker Carlson in an effort to establish itself as a “video-first platform.”
Following Musk’s 2022 acquisition of the platform, which has faced difficulties keeping advertisers on board due to issues, the platform announced last month that it will allow sponsors to place video advertising adjacent to specific content creators.
