Tension escalated near the deputy commissioner’s office in Shivamogga on Tuesday after a 10-foot fence was erected at the entrance of Idgah Maidan, claiming it as Waqf property.

Two groups engaged in heated arguments, prompting Superintendent of Police G K Mithun Kumar to intervene. On Monday, Muslims had conducted Eid-ul-Fitr prayers at the ground. However, on Tuesday, local visitors, who usually park vehicles near the Idgah Maidan, were inconvenienced by the fence.

Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and BJP leaders asserted that the land belonged to the City Corporation and that the fence was illegally installed. They demanded its immediate removal. Conversely, the Idgah Maidan Committee claimed the land belonged to the Waqf Board, and they had the legal right to secure it.

The situation grew tense, leading to police intervention. VHP and BJP leaders staged a dharna, demanding an FIR against those responsible for the fence. SP Mithun Kumar assured that the ownership issue would be discussed with City Corporation officials before taking any action. Following this, the protesters withdrew their dharna.

Key political figures, including Ramesh Jadhav, Suresh Babu, Mohan Reddy, Deendayal, Shivanand, and Kiran, were present.
