Madikeri, June 26: Kodagu district experienced intense rainfall on June 26, resulting in a substantial increase in the water levels of major rivers like Cauvery and Kannika. The catchment areas received significant precipitation, leading to a rise in the inflow into the Harangi reservoir to 810 cubic feet per second (cusec), up from 514 cusec previously. This surge in water inflow has prompted authorities to monitor the reservoir levels closely to manage potential overflow.
At Triveni Sangama in Bhagamandala, a key confluence point of rivers in the region, the water levels have notably risen, reflecting the impact of the heavy downpour. Bhagamandala recorded 145 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, indicating the intensity of the weather event. Other areas in the district such as Napoklu, Ammathi, Shanthi, and Ponnampet also received substantial rainfall amounts ranging from 70 mm to 90 mm, contributing to the overall water accumulation in the region.
The rainfall distribution across Madikeri, Virajpet, Ponnampet, Somwarpet, and Kushalnagar taluks underscores the widespread nature of the weather system affecting Kodagu. As the monsoon progresses, authorities continue to monitor and manage the water resources to mitigate any potential risks posed by flooding and ensure public safety.
