A tense rescue operation unfolded in Shivamogga after nine people became trapped inside a malfunctioning lift at the Vishal Mart building, forcing firefighters to carry out an hour-long rescue mission.
The incident reportedly occurred around 8.30 pm on Sunday when the lift suddenly developed a technical fault while descending from the second floor.
Panic after lift stops working
According to reports, panic spread after the lift doors failed to open despite repeated attempts by mall staff to fix the issue.
With no immediate way out, one of the trapped occupants reportedly contacted the 112 emergency helpline, following which personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services Department rushed to the spot.
Videos circulating online showed rescue officials working urgently around the stalled lift while anxious bystanders gathered nearby.
Firefighters use cutter machine during rescue
Officials reportedly assessed the situation carefully before beginning rescue efforts using specialised tools to avoid injuring those trapped inside.
As attempts to manually open the lift failed, firefighters eventually brought in a cutter machine to force open the jammed doors.
The operation continued for nearly an hour before all nine occupants were safely brought out one by one.
One woman reportedly fell ill
According to reports, one woman experienced health complications during the ordeal, likely due to stress and prolonged confinement inside the lift. However, all occupants were ultimately rescued safely.
The incident has triggered concerns over lift maintenance and emergency preparedness in crowded commercial buildings.
Several social media users praised the fire department personnel for their quick response and patience during the rescue operation.
