Shivamogga: Shivamogga MP B.Y. Raghavendra has urged the Karnataka government to withdraw its order banning gutka, citing concerns over its possible impact on arecanut growers and the state’s plantation economy.
Speaking at a press conference in Shivamogga on August 14, Raghavendra alleged that the decision was influenced by lobbying from cigarette companies. He demanded that the order be withdrawn within 24 hours and warned that the BJP would launch protests if the government did not reconsider the decision.
Farmers fear market impact
The demand comes amid concerns over the arecanut market in Karnataka. Former minister and BJP MLA Araga Jnanendra had also recently warned that the gutka ban was contributing to a decline in arecanut prices, potentially placing financial pressure on growers.
Arecanut is an important commercial crop in Shivamogga and several other Karnataka districts. Government data and agricultural studies also recognise its significant economic role in the region.
Raghavendra has previously raised issues concerning arecanut exports and market access in Parliament, reflecting the importance of the crop to farmers in his constituency.
Political battle over the ban
Raghavendra also questioned why similar restrictions were not being imposed on cigarettes and liquor, according to the report.
The issue is likely to become a political flashpoint if the government maintains the order. For farmers, however, the immediate concern is whether reduced demand could affect arecanut prices and household incomes.
The debate comes at a time when Karnataka’s arecanut growers are already dealing with challenges including crop diseases, weather-related risks and market fluctuations.
