Karnataka is home to many unique and beautiful places comprising temples, sculptures to monuments etc. One such place is Shivagange, mainly a Hindu pilgrimage centre, situated at Nelamangala Taluk of Bengaluru Rural District, and a rare combination of spirituality as well as adventure.

Shivagange houses magnificent Lord Shiva Temple atop the hill. The hill is in a shape of Shivalinga, and come rainy season, when water flows through the hill it looks like Ganga flowing below from above the head of Lord Shiva. This is the reason that the place gets the name – Shivagange.

Further, the scenic beauty and the terrain of this place attracts trekkers regularly. The rocky mountains, panoramic view from atop the mountain, and the divinity of the location makes the visitors fall in love with the place.

Due to its spiritual atmosphere, Shivagange is popularly known as Dakshina Kashi. The place comprises many temples like Honnadevi, Patal Gange, Nandi statue, Gangadhareshwara temple and Patala Gange. The Gangadhareshwara Temple is a cave shrine that has spring water flowing throughout the year. Thus the hill has a cool climate. All the tiredness of the climb vanishes the moment we enter the temple.

The place is also abode to many theerthas such as Kanva Theertha, Agasthya Theertha, Patala Ganga, Kapila Theertha. During the auspicious occasion of Sankranti, a festival through which the wedding of Gangadhareshwara and Honnamma (Parvati) is conducted every year. The interesting fact of the temple is that the idol of Lord Shiva is worshiped with ghee that surprsingly turns into butter. And also it is said that Queen Shanthala, a famous dancer and wife of Hoysala King Vishnuvardhana died by jumping from atop the hill. This spot is till today called Shanthala point. Another interesting facet of the place is Olakallu Theertha. A spring like eater jets out from rocky hole throughout the year and no one till date knows the source of the water.

While on a trip to Shivagange, one can easily visit nearby places such as Bengaluru, Savanadurga, Channapatna, Tumakuru, and Siddaganga Matha. The best time to visit Shivagange is between October and March.
