Dharawad is a unique City in the State. This City is educational hub for the North Karnataka and houses many educational institutions as well as hundreds of coaching centres preparing youth towards competitive exams. However Dharawad is also famous for its iconic and historical sweet Babusingh Thakur Pedha. This pedha has a taste of Mathura Pedha. Dharawada Pedha has over 175 years of history and has won GI (Geographical Indication) tag.

History of Dharawada Pedha:

To escape the plague in the late 18th century, a Thakur family from Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, migrated to Dharawad. To earn a living, Ram Ratan Singh Thakur started making a sweet dish named pedha, using only milk and sugar and a secret formula.

With help from his grandson, the sweets were sold at Line Bazaar, and soon crowd started flocking to his stall. The recipe was passed down generations, and the same family continues to make 700-800 kgs of the sweet everyday.

Even today, this family business continues to flourish but they are sold under different names like Dharawad, Thakur, and Babu Singh Thakur Pedha.

Location of Dharwad Pedha:

As name suggests the Pedha is available in Dharawad. It is available at Line Bazar of the City. If we enters Line Bazar area, we feel and smell the aroma of the pedha.
