The most significant week in the Christian calendar is called Holy Week, commonly referred to as Passion Week. The holy week for this year started on Sunday, April 2 2023, and will end on Saturday, April 8 2023. Easter Sunday marks the completion of the season, which begins with Palm Sunday, which recalls Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem.
Christians from all around the world observe a variety of religious rituals and customs during Holy Week. For instance, Maundy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper, when Jesus sat down to a final meal with his disciples before being crucified. Christians commemorate Jesus’ crucifixion on Good Friday, while Holy Saturday is a day of introspection and preparation for the Easter holiday.
Over Holy Week, many churches also organise unique services, such as Stations of the Cross, where participants trace Jesus’ path to the cross, and Tenebrae, a solemn liturgy of light and darkness that concludes with the extinguishing of candles to symbolise Jesus’ death.
Christians ponder on Jesus’ death throughout Holy Week and reaffirm their commitment to following his teachings. It is a time of seriousness and joy, grief and hope, and growing faith and a closer relationship with God. Christians observe what is known as Holy Week, which comprises several notable days, in the week preceding Good Friday.
