Magic is more than just a sleight of hand, a trick or a game- It is an art that displays the years of hard work and immense passion of the artist. Everyone wants to be a magician or pretends to be one during their childhood years. But there are hardly a few whose passion for their art helps them preserve and achieve success.

Today, the NRI Newsmaker presents to you one such awe-inspiring magician- a man from humble roots, an artist with an aim to inspire and entertain- Antony Agnel Mascarenhas.

Speaking to News Karnataka, Antony shares his journey of ups and downs, success and failures of being a magician.

The Birth of a Magician:
Born and brought up in the beautiful city of Puttur in Dakshina Kannada, Antony is the youngest of Robert and Christine Mascarenhas’ three children. ‘Magician Antony’, as he is fondly called, with a smile remembers his childhood years of being the naughtiest and most active boy back in the day.
His love for magic and illusion goes back to these naughtier years when experimented and made several attempts to learn new skills using printed materials that he came across.

Speaking about his inspiration to pursue magic he says, “My journey into the world of magic started by watching Magicians performing various impossible acts at programmes during our school, college years. There was no virtual media at that time and books were the only source which was readily available and through which I succeeded in learning tricks”.

After a couple of years, the regular humdrums of life caught up to him. After gaining primary and higher education from Puttur, Antony went on to complete his technical education from CTI Madras.

Antony started his career as a teacher at the Hebich technical institute. A vibrant youth leader, he was a member of Don Bosco club Puttur, Rotaract Club Puttur and founder member of Dakshina Kannada district illusionists association. During his tenure in various associations, he was well known in the society for his social activities and self-less service towards mankind and needy.

A remarkable sportsperson he also made a name for himself by winning several accolades in cricket and indoor games including carom and chess.

He moved to Dubai to make a livelihood after tying the knot in 1993. He made a decision thereafter to revive his passion for art and work towards it again. Making time in his schedule, he started gaining more knowledge about magic and practicing for endless number of hours.

All of these activities did not let him stop serving his community. He joined hands with likeminded people and started the ‘Emirates Putturians’ association and became the first founder vice president of the association.

His experience and dedication to serve showed its rewards and he was soon elected as the president of Emirates Putturians and served at this position for 3 years (2005 to 2008).

For his hard work and efforts he was bestowed with the Life time achievement award by the Emirates Putturians in 2010.

The ‘Dove Magician’
As an illusionist, Antony has showcased his mesmerising talents at several events in UAE. He has performed at the Kundapura Devadiga Mitra’s inaugural event, Zabeel Yoga group events, SMKC annual meets and various other Karnataka based associations’ events. Along with these events, he has also performed at various musical nights and thousands of people have been spellbound by his performance.

A rarity in his acts which sets him apart from the rest, according to him, is his way of showcasing live animals and birds. He says that from his childhood years he has had great love and affection towards animals and birds. This love inspired him to perform and present new type of magic tricks.

Speaking about his techniques he says, “I started my magic years by using props owing to lesser risk factors. I used cylinders, cans, fully covered tables for my magic shows. Gradually, I realized that acts related to covering props raises suspicion and not interest. Hence to ensure that the audiences are more involved, I learned sleight of hand skills and thereafter my relationship with my audience was far better.”

“A few years later I ventured into Dove Act by procuring a kit from the Great Magician Andy Amyx from United States .People were amazed to see doves appeared from nowhere. It’s always risky to perform on stage using live animals and birds. Initially, I came across a lot of failures but my continuous efforts and improvisations eventually led me to success”, he said with pride.

People then started recognizing me as the ‘Dove magician’, he fondly remembers.

Indian perspective of magic needs a change
Speaking about the concept magic and illusion as a profession, he says, “Magic is a performing art and anyone who masters the skill with hard work can become a professional Magician. In the west, it is a professional subject which any one can opt and learn at a University”.

“There are places where Magic is performed everyday throughout the year, but from the Indian perspective a very few professional Magicians come out each year due to their unchanged mindset that being a magician is not a profession. This mindset needs to undergo a massive change for the scenario to be different out here”, he believes.

‘Give it all you got’
Speaking about his experience as a magician, Antony in a humble manner gave thanks to the almighty for his blessings. He thanks divine providence for making him able to reach this far without any professional guidance and training.

He goes on to speak about Ace magicians Uday Jadugar, Kudroli Ganesh, Vikram Jadugar  and Fr. Ivan Madtha for being his inspiration during his early days.

He also says that he owes all of this success to his beloved wife Nirmala, daughter Ancil and son Aaron for their support.

During his initial days as a magician, he says, his support system in the UAE was Lancy Dais along with Praveen and Shashi who continue helping him with his performances.

As a message to readers and magic enthusiasts, Antony says, “Magic is a performing art. Enjoy it, appreciate the effort behind it for the simple fact that this art is not growing! My humble request to the readers is: our mindset should change and more people should learn this art not only to know the secrets but to perform and entertain so that this art will be alive in the masses”.

He concluded by saying, “If you are really willing to achieve something and if you have the dedication you can achieve anything in this world. So never stop pursuing your dreams”.

Antony is a wonderful example of determination and is indeed an inspiration to many.

News Karnataka wishes him all the success in his future endeavours.
