Mangaluru: The students of paramedical course at the Government Wenlock Hospital were forced to sit idly in their classrooms from morning till noon, as the classes have not commenced yet.
It can be recalled that students of second-year paramedical course recently staged a protest urging the government to resume classes after appointing permanent lecturers. The students also accused the hospital administration of ill-treatment. Though efforts were being made to start the classes for second-year students, the first-year students are now forced to return home without attending any classes.
A first-year student on condition of anonymity told Newskarnataka that students are being asked to come to the hospital every day. “Most of us live in far flung areas. We somehow reach the hospital on time hoping that we will get to learn something. But, we are asked to stay idle in the classroom as there are no teaching faculty,” said a student adding that though the classes commenced on November 23, only a few classes were held so far.
“Over the last five days, there have no classes at all. This wasteful; exercise of coming to college everyday shelling out money is turning out to be difficult for most of us as we all come from economically backward families,” says another student who is now repending over her decision of joining a paramedical course.

District Medical Officer (DMO) Dr. H R Rajeshwari Devi, when contacted informed that classes are going on regularly. “As the paramedical course is a practical-oriented course. We are offering classes in a government hospital and hence the students cannot expect the atmosphere, which is prevailing in a private college. We are striving hard to provide education to them with limited staff and limited infrastructure,“ she said adding that as there is no permanent teaching staff to teach the students of paramedical course, they have outsourced MSc graduates to teach physics, chemistry and other subjects.
We will hold a protest again: SFI
The Student Federation of India (SFI), which has taken up the issue of paramedical students of Wenlock hospital has now informed that it would stage protest again if no classes are held for the students even after their recent protest. SFI district secretary Madhuri Bolar informed that the SFI would communicate with the students of first-year paramedical course. “If the hospital does not rectify the problems immediately, the SFI would be ready to hold protest again“, she said.
