When traffic lights are mere show pieces….

Mangaluru: The evolution in the modes of transportation made man travel distant places comfortably in shorter durations. The early inventor of automobile would have never imagined a future with traffic jams and the pathos of a traffic police man in the given scenario. Mangaluru, on the verge of being a smart city, has its share of growing vehicular population and the consequent heavy traffic jams.
Traffic signalThe invention of signal lights did ease the jobs of traffic police but the recent trend in the smart city Mangaluru seems to have a different story to tell. The signal lights are shut and the police are made to manually handle the ever burgeoning city traffic.

One round around the city will show the seemingly functional traffic lights just letting out the orange signal and the poor traffic cops beneath them controlling the traffic in the hot sun or under heavy showers. Some traffic lights stand tall defunct and some in the junctions where vehicular density is either minimal or nil. The ones installed in heavy traffic zones give all the signals at once and or no signals at all. As smart city is getting apparently smarter, the traffic handling part is going in a reverse direction.

In this “jam”packed city, one can only find few traffic lights functional and the rest seem to be in a coma. Traffic lights near Nantoor, Kankanady, Bendoorwell, Balmatta, Jyothi, Bunts Hostel, Karangalpady, Bharath Mall and Hampankatta are dead. Though traffic cops seem too manage the show every time, the need of the hour is to smoothen traffic control.

Some disgruntled commuters just poured it out with Newskarnataka. One of the commuters said, “There are huge traffic jams during the peak hours, especially in Nantoor. The situation gets out of hands of the cops when everyone tries to go first.  Though the traffic lights are installed, they are not working and hence creating problems for the public and the police as well.”

Nithin Shetty highlighted, “There is a huge waste of money on these traffic lights. If the cops have to manage the show each time, why do we need traffic lights? There is no use of keeping such traffic lights as show pieces. Let not the public money be squandered.”

Meanwhile, when Newskarnataka contacted ACP Tilakchandra, he said, “The traffic lights installed in Nanthoor are maintained by the National Highway authorities. Since the last few days we have been asking them to fix them. In four other places, BEL has put up traffic lights. On Bendoorwell Road near the horticulture junction, road construction is underway and hence it is not possible for us to put up the traffic lights. We are trying our best to fix all the traffic lights which are not functioning.”

When the people of Mangaluru pay their road taxes they definitely expect traffic lights to function. But in the current scenario, the fate of the new traffic lights that are to be installed near KPT is yet a cynic’s butt of joke. Mangaloreans hope for a smarter way to manage traffic in a smart city.
