Book on Drug Trafficking, Narco-Terrorism released

Delhi: Dr. G. Shreekumar Menon’s book “Drug Trafficking and the Intriguing Tentacles of Narco-Terrorism,” was released at New Delhi’s India Habitat Center by former MP of Rajya Sabha Mr. Tarun Vijay.

Addressing the gathering of bureaucrats and defence personnel, Mr. Vijay explained the alarming situation in different parts of the globe including India which is facing the brunt of the unprecedented influx of drugs. The Western border with Pakistan is facing active drug trafficking on an everyday basis. The ports on the Western maritime frontier have been seeing massive drug consignments being seized in recent times. The sale proceeds are funding many anti-national activities in the country.

Mr. Sudanshu Pandey IAS (Rtd) and the present Election Commissioner for UT’s pointed out the alarming drug addiction among the youth. An unprecedented health crisis is being created by the escalating use of drugs.

Mr. N. Venkatraman Additional Solicitor General of India explained the intricacies of the NDPS law in tackling the drug crisis. He also pointed out the role of foreign nationals in the narcotics trade.

Mr. Vinit Goenka BJP Spokesperson highlighted the actions being taken by the government to control drug trafficking.

Dr. G. Shreekumar Menon author and retired IRS Officer dwelt on the lessons to be learnt from the Opium Wars and the role played by Indian soldiers in the epic battle in which the Opium merchant David Sassoon of Bombay played a stellar role, and for which he was knighted. Dr. Menon also proposed that the government should set up a National University of Narcotics Sciences (NUNS) to ensure a steady supply of trained drug counsellors, psychiatrists, nurses, and which would also act as a think tank to advise the government on drug policy matters.
