Hindus celebrate Ram Navami, every year on the ninth day of Chaitra month, the first month in the Hindu lunar calendar, which falls on March 30 this year. The festival of Ram Navami marks the birth of Lord Rama to King Dasharatha of Ayodhya. It also celebrates the descent of Vishnu as the Rama avatar.

King Dashratha is known to have had three queens, Kaushalya, Sumitra, and Kaikeyi. For a very long time, none of the three queens could have children. Following this, Vasishtha, a sage, recommended that King Dashratha carry out a sacred ritual called the “Putrakameshti Yagna.” In the ritual, the King gave ‘payasam’ to each of his wives in a bid to grant his wish of having children. The King was blessed with a baby boy on the ninth day of the Hindu month, Chitra. Lord Rama was born of Queen Kaushalya, while Lakshmana and Bharata were born of the other queens.

The importance of this festival clearly states the triumph of good over evil. On this day, Hindus visit temples, observe fasts and seek Lord Rama for his blessings. Devotees offer water to Surya as a form of worship. This is because it is believed that Lord Rama’s ancestors were Surya’s descendants.

#RamNavmi has been trending second on Twitter on March 30. President Droupadi Murmu, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, Rahul Gandhi and others users shared their Ram Navami wishes on Twitter.

The life of Lord Ram will serve as an inspiration for humanity in all eras, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on the auspicious anniversary of Ram Navami on Thursday. ”Maryada Purushottam’ Lord Ram’s life was based on sacrifice, tapasya, restraint and resolve,” he tweeted.

“Let us internalise the ideals of Maryada Purushottam Lord Ram in every sphere of our life, and dedicate ourselves to make India a glorious nation,” wrote President Droupadi Murmu.

Home Minister Amit Shah said that Maryada Purushottam Prabhu Shri Ram taught the world to have patience and a sense of kindness even under tense situations, in addition to treading the path of religion and truth. May Lord Shri Ram shower his blessings on everyone, he added.
