The 2025 Champions Trophy in Karachi marks a significant milestone, as it brings an ICC tournament back to Pakistan for the first time in nearly three decades. This return follows a long hiatus, caused by the tragic 2009 Lahore terror attacks, which left several Sri Lankan cricketers injured and caused a loss of lives. These events led to a ban on international cricket in Pakistan, forcing the country to host matches abroad, primarily in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

The Karachi crowd and New Zealand’s Devon Conway were taken by surprise when fighter jets flew over the stadium shortly after Pakistan’s captain Mohammad Rizwan opted to bowl. The loud noise from the jets startled Conway and the crowd, causing some fans to cover their ears and even clutch their chests. The lingering scars from the past were evident, as some spectators were visibly shaken by the noise.

Despite security concerns, Pakistan has made significant strides in ensuring a safe environment for the Champions Trophy. Over 12,000 police personnel have been deployed across Lahore and Rawalpindi, including senior officers, constables, and female officers. Nine special chartered flights have also been arranged to accommodate fans.

The Champions Trophy brings memories of Pakistan’s stunning 2017 victory over India in the final. Despite being underdogs, Pakistan defeated India by 180 runs, with Fakhar Zaman’s brilliant century and Mohammad Amir’s brilliant bowling performance. The Men in Green had pulled off an unforgettable win, defying expectations.
