Shanghai: Alexander Zverev has reportedly secured the year-end world No. 1 ranking in men’s tennis, becoming the first German man to reach the top of the ATP rankings since Boris Becker achieved the feat in 1991.
The 29-year-old’s rise to the summit follows Carlos Alcaraz’s third-round exit at the Shanghai Masters, which has reportedly opened the way for Zverev to finish the 2026 season as the world’s highest-ranked player.
The milestone would mark a major achievement in Zverev’s career, which has seen him establish himself among the leading players on the ATP Tour. His performances throughout 2026, including deep runs at major tournaments and significant title victories, have strengthened his position in men’s tennis.
Becker remains the only other German man to have occupied the top spot in the ATP rankings. He reached world No. 1 twice in 1991 and spent a combined 12 weeks at the summit.
Germany’s long wait for another world No. 1
Zverev’s reported achievement would end a 35-year wait for Germany to have a men’s world No. 1. Becker, a six-time Grand Slam champion, became one of the most recognisable figures in tennis after winning Wimbledon as a teenager in 1985.
Since Becker’s time at the top, Germany has produced several prominent players, but none had matched his achievement in the men’s rankings until Zverev’s reported rise.
Zverev has spent years competing against the leading players of his generation, including Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic. His consistency across different surfaces and his performances at the sport’s biggest tournaments have helped establish him as a leading contender for the top ranking.
The German’s 2026 campaign has been particularly notable, with Grand Slam success and strong performances across the ATP Tour playing a key role in his progress.
Sinner’s injury changes the rankings race
The absence of Jannik Sinner has also influenced the battle for the year-end No. 1 position.
The Italian has reportedly been sidelined since winning Wimbledon in July because of a knee injury. His absence has ruled him out of several major tournaments, including the North American hard-court swing, the US Open, the China Open in Beijing and the Shanghai Masters.
Before his injury, Sinner had enjoyed an outstanding season, compiling a 44-3 win-loss record and winning five ATP Masters 1000 titles before his Wimbledon triumph.
His withdrawal from the Shanghai Masters further affected his chances of finishing the season at the top of the rankings. With Sinner unable to add to his points tally, Zverev had an opportunity to strengthen his position in the year-end standings.
Alcaraz’s early elimination in Shanghai then provided another significant development in the rankings race.
Zverev’s breakthrough Grand Slam season
Zverev’s rise has been built on an impressive run of performances throughout 2026.
He began the year with a semi-final appearance at the Australian Open and continued to reach the later stages of major ATP Masters 1000 tournaments. He also finished runner-up in Madrid, while facing defeats against eventual champions Alcaraz and Sinner earlier in the season.
His biggest breakthrough came at the French Open, where he defeated Flavio Cobolli in a five-set final to win his maiden Grand Slam title.
The victory made Zverev the first German man to win the French Open in the Open Era, adding a major championship to a career that had previously featured several high-profile final appearances.
Zverev followed that triumph with another landmark performance at Wimbledon, reaching the final. In doing so, he became the first German man to contest the title match at all four Grand Slam tournaments.
He then continued his strong form at the US Open, claiming his second major title of the season. According to the supplied report, he dropped only one set after the opening two rounds and completed the Grand Slam season with a 25-2 win-loss record.
The two major titles represented a significant step forward for Zverev, who had previously come close to winning a Grand Slam without securing the championship.
Shanghai Masters adds another chapter
Zverev entered the Shanghai Masters after competing at the China Open, where he lost to Djokovic in the quarter-finals.
At Shanghai, he opened his campaign with a victory over Quentin Halys and was scheduled to face Alexander Bublik in the round of 16 on Tuesday.
Although the tournament has attracted attention because of the rankings implications, Zverev’s reported year-end achievement reflects his results across the season rather than a single tournament.
He finished 2024 as the world No. 2 and has reportedly now reached the top of the rankings for the end of 2026, joining Djokovic, Alcaraz and Sinner among active players to have secured the year-end No. 1 honour.
If confirmed by the ATP’s official rankings, the achievement would place Zverev in a distinguished position in German tennis history and cap a season in which he has transformed his Grand Slam record while establishing himself as one of the dominant players on the tour.
