The maiden ODI call-up of Ayush Badoni has triggered a lively debate among Indian cricket fans, with opinions divided over his inclusion in the ongoing series against New Zealand.

The 26-year-old all-rounder was added to the squad as a replacement for Washington Sundar, who was ruled out of the remainder of the three-match series after suffering a strain in his left lower rib area. While the call-up marks a significant milestone in Badoni’s career, it has also drawn criticism from sections of social media.

Questions over domestic numbers

Soon after the squad update, critics highlighted Badoni’s modest List A record, pointing out that he has scored 693 runs in 22 innings and taken 22 wickets. His ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign has also been subdued, with only 16 runs from three innings.

Some fans went further, alleging favouritism by head coach Gautam Gambhir, citing his previous association with Badoni at Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL and their shared Delhi background.

IPL form strengthens his case

Supporters, however, argue that Badoni’s IPL performances justify the opportunity. In the 2025 season, he scored 329 runs in 11 innings, often showing composure under pressure. Selectors are believed to have viewed him as a like-for-like all-round replacement for Sundar.

Coach expresses confidence

Badoni’s coach, Sarandeep Singh, strongly backed the selection, saying the Delhi all-rounder is ready for international cricket “right away”. Speaking to IANS, he said Badoni’s call-up was overdue and a reward for consistent improvement over the last two years, particularly in bowling.

Sudden call amid domestic duties

The call-up came mid-tournament, with Badoni leaving Delhi’s Vijay Hazare Trophy quarterfinal preparations to join the national squad ahead of the second ODI.

For Badoni, the debate is now secondary. With his first ODI call-up secured, the focus shifts to performance and whether he can turn scrutiny into success on the international stage.
