Barcelona Gains Temporary Approval for Olmo and Victor’s Registration

Dani Olmo and Pau Victor of Barcelona have been granted provisional clearance to play for the club after receiving precautionary approval from the Spanish Sports Council (CSD) on Wednesday. This temporary measure comes as the financially strained club was unable to register the players before the December deadline. Both Olmo and Victor were initially given temporary licenses upon their summer arrival.

The CSD’s decision allows the players to be selected by Barcelona, pending a final resolution in the ongoing dispute between the club, La Liga, and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). These governing bodies had blocked Barcelona’s efforts to renew the players’ registrations. The ruling suspends the earlier decisions by La Liga and RFEF, allowing the players’ licenses to remain valid while the appeal is resolved.

Despite this development, Olmo and Victor were expected to miss Barcelona’s Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Athletic Bilbao in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday. If Barcelona advances to the final, the players could feature on Sunday. They will also be eligible for future matches until the final CSD ruling is made.

Barcelona’s attempts to secure permanent registration for the players have been hampered by legal setbacks, including two lost court cases last week. In response, the club sold VIP boxes at their under-construction Spotify Camp Nou, raising €100 million to comply with La Liga’s financial regulations. However, the sale was finalized three days after the deadline, and the players’ licenses expired. Barcelona argues that due to their improved financial situation, they should be allowed to register the players during the open transfer window.
