Dhaka: Bangladesh cricket has been plunged into controversy after a government probe uncovered serious irregularities in the October 2025 Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) elections, including allegations of vote-rigging, coercion, and abuse of power.

The findings were submitted by a five-member investigation panel led by former justice AKM Asaduzzaman to the sports ministry, painting a troubling picture of how the elections were conducted.

Probe reveals “unfair and manipulated” election

According to the report, the election process was “not free, fair or transparent”, with voters allegedly intimidated and procedural violations widespread.

The panel also noted a lack of cooperation from top BCB officials during the investigation, raising further concerns over governance within the board.

Government representatives stated there was sufficient evidence to conclude that both BCB officials and individuals within the sports ministry were involved in manipulating the process.

Abuse of power and rule violations

The report highlighted multiple instances of alleged misconduct:

  • Aminul Islam Bulbul was accused of exceeding his authority by unilaterally nominating 10 councillors, violating the BCB constitution.
  • Nazmul Abedeen Fahim was also cited for using undue influence to secure positions.
  • Election deadlines for councillor submissions were reportedly extended multiple times without valid justification, allegedly to favour specific individuals.

Investigators concluded that these actions had a direct impact on the election outcome, undermining its credibility.

E-voting manipulation allegations

One of the most serious revelations involved the e-voting process, which the committee described as compromised.

  • Voting was reportedly conducted from a single location, raising concerns over confidentiality.
  • Voters were allegedly gathered at a hotel in Dhaka on the night before polling.
  • Testimonies suggested the process appeared “pre-planned” and lacked transparency.

The panel stated that such practices violated both democratic norms and the BCB’s own constitution.

Board dissolved, new leadership appointed

In response to the findings, authorities have moved to dissolve the existing BCB board and install an interim administration.

Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has been appointed as the new BCB president, heading an 11-member ad hoc committee that will oversee operations for the next three months.

This marks a significant leadership change aimed at restoring credibility and stability within Bangladesh cricket.

What happens next?

The developments could have far-reaching implications for cricket governance in Bangladesh, including:

  • Possible reforms in election procedures
  • Greater oversight of administrative processes
  • Increased scrutiny from international cricket bodies

Conclusion

The probe’s revelations have exposed deep-rooted issues within Bangladesh cricket administration. With a new interim leadership in place, the focus will now shift to restoring transparency, accountability, and trust in one of the country’s most popular sporting institutions.
