Dambulla: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to take a final call on disciplinary action against young cricketer Vaibhav Sooryavanshi following his physical altercation with a Sri Lankan player during a tri-nation A series match held in Dambulla on Monday. The incident, which involved Sri Lanka A’s Vishen Halambage, has drawn attention due to the intensity of the confrontation and the age of the Indian player.
Altercation during high-pressure Super Over
The incident occurred during a tense Super Over after both India A and Sri Lanka A ended their innings tied at 265 runs each. Sri Lanka set a target of 17 runs in the Super Over, putting India under pressure. However, the Indian side managed only nine runs, falling short of the target.
During the heated moments following the match, Sooryavanshi and Halambage were involved in a verbal exchange that escalated quickly. According to reports, Halambage made provocative remarks towards Indian batters, which led to a confrontation. The situation intensified when the Sri Lankan player came very close to Sooryavanshi, prompting the 15-year-old to push him.
Match referee recommends fines
Match referee Pradeep Jeyapragash reviewed the incident and reportedly recommended fines amounting to 50 per cent of the match fees for both Sooryavanshi and Halambage. The recommendations were made in accordance with the code of conduct applicable to A-team matches.
Additionally, India A captain Tilak Varma has also been recommended for a 30 per cent fine. His penalty is linked to his prolonged argument with on-field umpires over the decision to conduct a Super Over despite fading light conditions.
However, unlike international fixtures governed by the International Cricket Council (ICC), sanctions in A-team matches are not directly enforced. As a result, the match referee’s recommendations have been forwarded to the BCCI and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), who will now decide whether to ratify and impose the proposed penalties.
Separate sanctions for Sri Lankan players
In a related development, Sri Lanka’s Vishen Halambage and senior wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella have also faced disciplinary scrutiny. Halambage was reportedly sanctioned for his provocative conduct, which contributed to the escalation of the situation.
Meanwhile, Dickwella, who intervened during the altercation and helped prevent it from turning more serious, has been penalised for excessive appealing during the match. The exact nature and severity of the sanctions imposed on the Sri Lankan players have not been officially disclosed.
Questions raised over umpiring standards
Apart from the altercation, the match has also sparked criticism regarding the standard of umpiring. On-field umpires Shantha Fonseca and Prageeth Rambukwella have come under scrutiny for their decisions, particularly regarding the conduct of the Super Over under fading light conditions.
India A captain Tilak Varma’s disagreement with the umpires highlighted concerns over match management and player safety. Critics have pointed out that clearer guidelines and better decision-making could have helped avoid the tense situation.
Focus on discipline and young players
The spotlight remains firmly on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, given his young age and rising profile in Indian cricket. While emotions can run high in competitive matches, cricketing authorities are expected to emphasise discipline and sportsmanship, especially among emerging players.
The BCCI’s decision will be crucial in setting a precedent for handling such incidents in domestic and A-level cricket. It will also reflect the board’s stance on maintaining decorum and professionalism on the field.
Conclusion
As the matter awaits final decisions from the BCCI and Sri Lanka Cricket, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining composure in high-pressure situations. While competitive spirit is integral to the sport, adherence to discipline and respect remains paramount. The outcome of this case is likely to influence how similar incidents are addressed in the future.
