Mumbai: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made it clear that it wants teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to build a long and successful international career, rather than become a short-lived cricketing phenomenon.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the board is closely monitoring the 15-year-old and wants him to follow the example of legendary Indian batter Sachin Tendulkar by serving Indian cricket for many years. Saikia stressed that every step in Sooryavanshi’s development will be watched carefully to ensure his remarkable start does not turn into a “one series or one year wonder”.
The comments came after a BCCI review meeting held at the board headquarters in Mumbai on Thursday. The meeting was attended by Saikia, India Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, head coach Gautam Gambhir, Centre of Excellence head VVS Laxman and other senior BCCI officials.
BCCI wants Sooryavanshi to follow Tendulkar’s example
Sooryavanshi’s rise has been extraordinary, particularly considering his age. He has already made an impact across domestic, franchise and international cricket, prompting the BCCI to take a long-term approach towards his development.
Saikia said the board is proud to be promoting a player who is making an impression on the international stage at only 15. However, he also indicated that the BCCI does not want the youngster’s rapid rise to create unnecessary pressure or unrealistic expectations.
According to Saikia, the board wants Sooryavanshi and other players of similar potential to establish careers comparable to the greats of Indian cricket.
The BCCI secretary said the youngster is being monitored from “every angle”, with the board keeping a close watch on each stage of his international career.
The reference to Tendulkar is particularly significant. The former India batter made his international debut as a teenager and went on to establish himself as one of the greatest players in cricket history. By highlighting Tendulkar as the model, the BCCI is signalling that Sooryavanshi’s development will be viewed as a long-term project rather than being based only on his immediate performances.
A remarkable start at just 15
Sooryavanshi has already produced numbers that would be impressive for an established professional, let alone a player who is only 15.
Recently, he became the youngest player to score a half-century in the history of the Duleep Trophy. He achieved the feat at the age of 15 years and 157 days, breaking a record that had stood for 57 years.
His performances have also extended to international cricket. In India’s three-match series against Zimbabwe, Sooryavanshi scored 151 runs and was named Player of the Series as India completed a 3-0 clean sweep.
His arrival on the international stage followed an extraordinary IPL 2026 campaign with Rajasthan Royals. Sooryavanshi scored 776 runs in the tournament at a staggering strike rate of 237.30. His campaign included one century and five fifties, while his 72 sixes set a new IPL record.
Those performances earned him several major post-season awards, including the Orange Cap, Most Valuable Player, Emerging Player, Super Striker and Super Sixes honours.
IPL success accelerated his rise
The 2026 IPL season was the major turning point in Sooryavanshi’s career.
Playing for Rajasthan Royals, the young batter displayed an unusually aggressive approach and repeatedly took on experienced bowlers. His ability to score at an extraordinary rate made him one of the biggest stories of the tournament.
His 776 runs also established him as the leading run-scorer in the competition. More remarkable was the manner in which those runs were accumulated, with his strike rate of 237.30 underlining his attacking style.
The 72 sixes he hit during the season further demonstrated his ability to clear the boundary consistently. The performances ultimately earned him his India opportunity, making him the youngest Indian to make his international debut in the T20I series against England.
For the BCCI, however, the challenge now goes beyond identifying talent. The focus is on ensuring that Sooryavanshi can cope with the demands of international cricket while continuing to develop technically, physically and mentally.
Under-19 World Cup added to his credentials
Even before his IPL breakthrough, Sooryavanshi had already established himself as one of the most exciting young batters in the country.
At the ICC Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup earlier this year, he scored 439 runs and was named Player of the Tournament. That performance provided an indication of his ability against high-level youth opposition before his rapid transition into senior cricket.
His subsequent performances in the IPL, international cricket and Duleep Trophy have made his progression unusually rapid.
However, the BCCI’s latest comments suggest that the organisation understands the risks associated with such a quick rise. A player entering international cricket at 15 can face intense scrutiny, increased workload and expectations from fans and the media.
That makes the emphasis on guidance particularly important.

The BCCI’s intention appears to be to ensure that promising youngsters are integrated carefully rather than being rushed solely because of early success. Comparisons with Tendulkar are inevitable whenever a teenager makes an extraordinary impact in Indian cricket. However, the BCCI’s message is less about comparing their batting records and more about highlighting longevity.
