Mumbai: Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene has revealed that pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah played the T20 World Cup 2026 with a niggle, which subsequently affected his performance during the ongoing Indian Premier League season.

Bumrah, widely regarded as one of the best fast bowlers in world cricket, has endured a rare lean phase this season, managing just four wickets in 13 matches. Jayawardene attributed this dip in form to a combination of workload, injury management, and a gradual return to peak fitness.

Niggle impacted Bumrah’s sharpness

Speaking ahead of Mumbai Indians’ final league match against Rajasthan Royals, Jayawardene explained that Bumrah had been dealing with a minor injury since the T20 World Cup.

According to the coach, the injury forced the pacer to compromise on intensity during the early stages of IPL 2026. While Bumrah was given adequate rest after the global tournament, his return was carefully managed to avoid aggravating the issue.

Jayawardene noted that Bumrah’s pace was noticeably down in the first few matches as part of a “gradual build-up” process. This cautious approach, while necessary, impacted his effectiveness and execution on the field.

Workload management and tactical changes

Mumbai Indians adopted a strategic approach to manage Bumrah’s workload throughout the tournament. The franchise allowed key Indian players, including Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma, to join the pre-season camp just days before the IPL began, ensuring sufficient recovery time after international commitments.

Jayawardene revealed that discussions with Bumrah and the support staff focused on balancing preparation with recovery. The team also experimented with different bowling roles for the pacer to reduce pressure, although he continued to shoulder responsibilities in crucial phases, especially during the death overs.

Despite these efforts, Bumrah’s rhythm took time to return, and his impact remained limited in the earlier part of the season.

Opposition teams played cautiously

Interestingly, Jayawardene pointed out that despite Bumrah’s dip in form, opposition teams continued to show respect to his abilities. Batters often chose to play him cautiously rather than take risks, which also limited his wicket-taking opportunities.

He added that the lack of consistent support from other bowlers prevented Mumbai Indians from building sustained pressure, making it easier for opponents to negotiate Bumrah’s overs without significant damage.

Signs of return to form

Encouragingly for Mumbai Indians, Jayawardene believes that Bumrah has regained his rhythm in the latter stages of the tournament. The pacer has been clocking speeds close to 140 kmph and executing his trademark yorkers effectively in recent matches.

The coach emphasised that Bumrah is now fully fit and bowling with confidence, indicating that his struggles were more situational than long-term concerns.

However, he acknowledged that it was unfortunate for Mumbai Indians that Bumrah rediscovered form only towards the end of a disappointing campaign, by which time the team was already out of playoff contention.

Technical adjustments and discipline

Another area of concern this season has been Bumrah’s no-ball issue. Jayawardene confirmed that the pacer has been working on correcting his run-up and improving discipline during breaks between matches.

The coach praised Bumrah’s work ethic, highlighting his commitment to training and willingness to adapt. According to Jayawardene, the 32-year-old remained positive throughout the challenging phase and actively sought solutions to improve his performance.

Tough season for Mumbai Indians

The IPL 2026 season has been underwhelming for Mumbai Indians, with inconsistent performances across departments leading to their early exit from the playoff race. Bumrah’s lack of impact, combined with struggles from other bowlers, has been a key factor in the team’s disappointing run.

While the franchise experimented with combinations and strategies, they were unable to find the right balance to compete consistently against stronger sides.

Conclusion

As Mumbai Indians prepare to play their final match of the season, the focus will be on finishing on a positive note and building momentum for the future. For Jasprit Bumrah, the season serves as a reminder of the challenges of managing workload and fitness at the highest level.

With his fitness restored and rhythm returning, Bumrah is expected to bounce back stronger in upcoming assignments. Mumbai Indians, too, will look to regroup and come back with renewed strength in the next edition of the IPL.
