New Delhi: Jasprit Bumrah is set to feature in only one format during India’s upcoming series against Afghanistan, as the national selection committee prepares to announce squads on May 19 while carefully managing the pacer’s workload.

India will host Afghanistan for a one-off Test and a three-match ODI series next month, with selectors expected to strike a balance between continuity and experimentation, especially in the limited-overs format.

Schedule and series significance

The one-off Test, which is not part of the World Test Championship cycle, will be played at New Chandigarh from June 6 to 10. This will be followed by three ODIs scheduled for June 14 in Dharamsala, June 17 in Lucknow, and June 20 in Chennai.

The ODI series has garnered significant attention as it remains the only format currently played by senior stars like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in international cricket, making it a key assignment for India’s experienced core.

Bumrah’s workload under focus

The selectors, led by Ajit Agarkar, are unlikely to risk overburdening Bumrah following his intense participation in the Indian Premier League 2026.

According to sources, Bumrah will either play the Test match or the ODI series, but not both. If he features in the red-ball game, he will be rested for the ODIs, and vice versa.

Despite the packed schedule, it is unlikely that Bumrah will skip the entire two-week assignment, given his commitment to representing India across formats.

Prince Yadav in contention after strong performances

One of the key talking points ahead of the squad announcement is the potential inclusion of Prince Yadav. The Delhi pacer has impressed selectors with his consistent performances in domestic cricket and the ongoing IPL.

Prince claimed 17 wickets in eight matches during the Vijay Hazare Trophy and has followed it up with 16 wickets in 12 matches in IPL 2026. His standout moment came when he dismissed Virat Kohli with a brilliant seaming delivery, underlining his ability to perform at the highest level.

With Harshit Rana still recovering from injury, the Afghanistan series could present the perfect opportunity for Prince to make his international debut.

No major changes expected in Test squad

For the Test match, the selectors are expected to stick with a settled group of players, keeping future overseas assignments in mind, including tours of Sri Lanka and New Zealand.

In the batting department, Devdutt Padikkal is likely to be considered for the No. 3 spot, potentially replacing Sai Sudharsan. Other options include Washington Sundar and Dhruv Jurel, both of whom offer versatility.

The wicketkeeping duties are expected to be handled by Rishabh Pant and Jurel, who are considered automatic selections in the longest format.

Pace attack combinations under consideration

If Bumrah is unavailable for the Test, the pace attack is likely to be led by Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna.

With injuries to Akash Deep and Harshit Rana, Jammu and Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi has emerged as a strong contender for a reserve spot. Nabi had an exceptional domestic season, picking up 60 wickets in the last Ranji Trophy.

However, he faces competition from pace-bowling all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, who offers additional batting depth.

If Bumrah plays the Test, the number of frontline pacers is expected to be limited, given spin-friendly Indian conditions.

Spin department largely settled

India’s spin attack is unlikely to see major changes, with Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar expected to be automatic selections.

However, Axar Patel could face competition for his place in the Test squad. While experience may work in his favour, emerging talents like Manav Suthar are pushing for opportunities.

Although Harsh Dubey has been selected for the Sri Lanka A tri-series, he is unlikely to be considered for this particular assignment.

Strategic balance between present and future

The upcoming series presents India with a chance to balance immediate results with long-term planning. While the Test squad is expected to remain stable, the ODI series could see the introduction of fresh faces.

Managing Bumrah’s workload remains central to the selection strategy, reflecting the team’s focus on preserving key players for major tournaments ahead.

Conclusion

As India gear up for the Afghanistan series, the spotlight will be on squad composition and strategic choices. Jasprit Bumrah’s limited participation highlights the importance of workload management in modern cricket, while players like Prince Yadav stand on the brink of significant opportunities.

With a mix of experience and emerging talent, the series could play a crucial role in shaping India’s bench strength and future prospects.
