A complaint has been lodged against Indian cricketer Hardik Pandya at the Shivajinagar Police Station alleging disrespect to the national flag during celebrations following India’s T20 World Cup victory.
The complaint was filed by Pune-based lawyer Wajed Khan Bidkar, who submitted a written application seeking action against the cricketer.
Allegations linked to celebration video
According to the complaint, videos circulating on social media show members of the Indian cricket team celebrating their victory at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad after winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
In one such clip, Pandya is seen celebrating with the Indian tricolour draped over his shoulder while running and dancing on the field.
The complainant alleged that during the celebrations Pandya was seen lying on the stage with the national flag still draped around him, which he claims amounts to disrespect towards the flag.
Legal provisions cited in complaint
Bidkar referred to provisions related to the dignity of the national flag under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act 1971.
Speaking about the complaint, he said the national flag represents the entire country and must be treated with dignity during public celebrations.
According to him, the police initially noted that the alleged incident took place in Ahmedabad, but he argued that a complaint could still be filed because the issue concerns a national symbol.
Police receive complaint
Officials at the Shivajinagar police station have reportedly accepted the complaint and issued an acknowledgement copy to the complainant.
Police sources said the matter will be examined to determine whether further action is required.
India’s historic T20 victory
The controversy comes after India defeated New Zealand national cricket team by 96 runs in the final to defend their T20 World Cup title.
The victory marked a historic achievement, making India national cricket team the first team to win the tournament on home soil and the first to secure three T20 World Cup titles.
