Pakistan’s batting maverick, Babar Azam, is all set to shoulder the responsibility of his team in the white-ball tournament.
The talismanic batter was dropped from the captaincy following the team’s underwhelming performance in the ICC Men’s World Cup held last year in India. He was appointed Pakistan’s white-ball captain just months before the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to begin on June 2.
The PCB selection committee has made a unanimous decision to hand over the captaincy duty to him. “Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi has appointed Babar Azam as the white-ball (ODI and T20I) captain of the Pakistan men’s cricket team,” PCB confirmed on social media.
After the ODI World Cup campaign, fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi was made T20 captain, and Shan Masood was handed over the responsibility of the Test team.
Considering the performance of Lahore Qalandars, a team in the Pakistan Super League, which won consecutive titles in 2022 and 2023, Afridi was handed over the captaincy. But the team did not perform well in the first assignment as captain; in the five-match T20 series in New Zealand, the team managed to win just one game.
Azam’s first assignment after reappointment as captain will be the five-match T20 series against New Zealand on Pakistani soil.
Pakistani cricket lovers are eagerly anticipating how the team will perform in the marquee tournament. Pakistan features in Group A of the T20 World Cup and will clash with India, Ireland, Canada, and the USA.
