Bengaluru: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have formally complained to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over the use of a controversial ‘dosa idli’ song and alleged remarks by the stadium DJ during their IPL 2026 clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
The complaint, reported by The Indian Express, highlights concerns from the CSK camp over what they described as inappropriate and insensitive content played during the high-profile encounter.
CSK object to song and DJ remarks
According to the complaint, the song featuring the lyrics “dosa, idli, sambar, chutney” — often used in social media memes referencing South Indian stereotypes — was played during the match. CSK officials termed the choice “not in good taste,” especially in a competitive sporting environment.
A top IPL official confirmed that the matter has been taken up by the governing council. “We have received a complaint from CSK and are looking into it,” the official said.
CSK managing director Kasi Viswanathan also expressed displeasure over the DJ’s conduct during the match.
“The DJs are usually around to support the home team. But at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, it was different. Certain comments were made against our players. Considering it, we have written to the BCCI to have a look into it,” he said.
Concerns over sportsmanship
The CSK management further alleged that the DJ made remarks following the dismissal of their players, which they felt crossed the line of acceptable behaviour.
“They are not there to undermine the rivals or insult them,” a CSK official said, emphasising the need for maintaining decorum during matches.
The controversy has once again brought attention to the role of in-stadium entertainment and its boundaries, particularly in high-stakes tournaments like the IPL where emotions run high among players and fans alike.
Song’s history in RCB-CSK rivalry
The ‘dosa idli’ track, composed by musician Gana Appu, has been associated with the rivalry between CSK and RCB in recent years. It has frequently been used in memes and fan banter on social media platforms.
Last year, an RCB-related social media post featuring player Jitesh Sharma singing the song ahead of a match against CSK had sparked backlash from Chennai fans. However, no major on-field controversy had emerged until the latest incident.
Viswanathan noted that there had been no repeat of such incidents since then and stressed that DJs should refrain from making comments targeting opposition players.
“After that incident, there hasn’t been any repeat of it. The DJ isn’t supposed to make any comment on the opposition players. Moreover, we are fortunate to have a lovely fanbase that cheers us in numbers,” he added.
BCCI yet to take final call
The BCCI is currently reviewing the complaint and is expected to assess whether any guidelines regarding in-stadium conduct were violated. While DJs often play a role in energising home crowds, the governing body may consider clearer protocols to prevent similar controversies in the future.
The incident also raises broader questions about balancing fan engagement with respect and professionalism in sporting events.
On-field context
The off-field controversy comes amid contrasting fortunes for the two teams in IPL 2026. Royal Challengers Bengaluru have been in impressive form and recently climbed to the top of the points table following their victory over Lucknow Super Giants.
Chennai Super Kings, meanwhile, are struggling in the tournament and currently sit eighth with four points from five matches, making their upcoming fixtures crucial for a turnaround.
Conclusion
As the IPL continues to grow in popularity, maintaining the spirit of the game both on and off the field remains essential. The outcome of CSK’s complaint could set an important precedent for how in-stadium entertainment is managed in the future.
