Chennai Super Kings have signed Australian fast bowler Spencer Johnson as a replacement for compatriot Nathan Ellis ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

The 30-year-old left-arm pacer has been roped in for ₹1.5 crore, according to confirmation from the Indian Premier League on March 24.

Johnson opts out of PSL

Johnson was initially set to feature in the Pakistan Super League after being picked by Quetta Gladiators for PKR 5.6 crore. However, he withdrew from the tournament citing personal reasons, making him available for IPL duties.

His move marks yet another instance of players switching leagues amid a scheduling clash between the IPL and PSL.

Strengthening CSK pace attack

Johnson joins a pace unit that already includes Khaleel Ahmed, Matt Henry and Jamie Overton, adding depth and variety to the bowling attack.

The team, led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, is expected to benefit from Johnson’s left-arm angle and ability to generate pace and bounce.

International and IPL experience

Johnson has represented Australia national cricket team in 13 matches—five One Day Internationals and eight T20 Internationals—picking up 18 wickets.

In the IPL, he has previously played for Gujarat Titans in 2024 and Kolkata Knight Riders in 2025. Across nine IPL matches, he has taken five wickets.

Growing IPL–PSL player movement

Johnson becomes the third player this season to withdraw from the PSL and join the IPL as a replacement signing.

Zimbabwe pacer Blessing Muzarabani, who had initially signed for the PSL, joined Kolkata Knight Riders as a replacement for Mustafizur Rahman.

Similarly, Sri Lanka all-rounder Dasun Shanaka moved to Rajasthan Royals as a replacement for Sam Curran.

PCB raises concerns

The trend has drawn criticism from Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Chairman Mohsin Naqvi expressed frustration over players withdrawing after being picked in the PSL auction.

He warned that action would be taken against players breaching contractual obligations, noting that similar cases had occurred in previous seasons.

The scheduling overlap between the IPL and PSL for the second consecutive year has added to the complexity, though Naqvi stated that the clash itself was not the primary concern.

Conclusion

Spencer Johnson’s inclusion provides CSK with a valuable pace option as they gear up for IPL 2026. However, the increasing movement of players between leagues continues to spark debate, highlighting the growing competition between global T20 tournaments.
