Chennai: Five-time champions Chennai Super Kings have suffered an early setback ahead of Indian Premier League 2026, with their newly signed replacement Spencer Johnson set to miss the first three weeks of the tournament.

Johnson was brought in as a replacement for injured Australian pacer Nathan Ellis, who has been ruled out of the season due to a hamstring injury. However, the left-arm speedster will only join the squad between April 21 and 23, meaning he will be unavailable for CSK’s initial matches.

Replacement signing comes with delay

CSK secured Johnson’s services for ₹1.5 crore following Ellis’ injury, hoping to strengthen their pace attack. The Australian has played 13 international matches — including five ODIs and eight T20Is — and has taken 18 wickets for his country.

He also brings IPL experience, having previously represented Gujarat Titans and Kolkata Knight Riders.

Despite his credentials, his delayed arrival means CSK will have to manage the crucial early phase of the tournament without a like-for-like replacement for Ellis.

Ellis’ absence leaves a major gap

Ellis had built a reputation as a reliable death-overs specialist in T20 cricket, making his absence a significant blow to CSK’s bowling plans.

His ability to execute yorkers and control runs in the final overs was expected to play a key role in CSK’s campaign. Without him, the team lacks a proven finisher with the ball during high-pressure situations.

Pace attack under scrutiny

With Johnson unavailable initially, CSK’s pace resources appear relatively inexperienced and thin.

The current options include England all-rounder Jamie Overton, India’s Shivam Dube, New Zealand pacer Matt Henry, alongside Zak Foulkes, Gurjanpreet Singh, and Mukesh Choudhary.

Among them, Henry is expected to lead the pace attack, bringing international experience and consistency. However, the absence of a specialist death bowler could pose challenges in tight matches.

Johnson’s IPL track record

Johnson’s previous IPL outings have been limited. While playing for Kolkata Knight Riders last season, he featured in four matches and picked up just one wicket, with best figures of 1/42.

Nevertheless, he is regarded as a promising T20 bowler, particularly known for his variations and ability to bowl in pressure situations.

CSK management will be hoping he can quickly adapt and deliver once he joins the squad mid-season.

Season opener and early fixtures

CSK are set to begin their IPL 2026 campaign on March 30 against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati.

The absence of both Ellis and Johnson during the early phase means the team will need to rely heavily on their existing bowling resources to stay competitive in the tournament’s opening weeks.

Conclusion

While Spencer Johnson’s signing offers long-term reinforcement, his delayed availability adds to Chennai Super Kings’ early-season concerns.

With Nathan Ellis ruled out and no immediate replacement ready, CSK face a testing start to their IPL 2026 campaign. How they navigate this phase could play a crucial role in shaping their title hopes.
