Chennai: The Duleep Trophy 2026 final begins on Sunday with East Zone taking on South Zone at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, with teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi among the biggest attractions of the five-day contest.

The final is scheduled to begin at 9:30 am IST, with the toss at 9:00 am. The match was originally scheduled to be played at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru but was moved to Chepauk in Chennai to allow spectators to attend the domestic showpiece.

East Zone, led by Ishan Kishan, have reached the final after defeating North East Zone in the quarter-final and Central Zone in the semi-final. South Zone, captained by Tilak Varma, booked their place in the title clash with a seven-wicket victory over North Zone.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi faces another big test

The spotlight will naturally fall on 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who has rapidly become one of the most watched young cricketers in India.

Sooryavanshi made a strong impact in East Zone’s semi-final against Central Zone, scoring 92 in the first innings before making a brisk 40 during the successful run chase. His fearless strokeplay has been one of the defining features of his rise through Indian cricket.

The final, however, represents another important step in his development because he is moving into a longer red-ball contest against a strong South Zone attack.

Sooryavanshi has already achieved major milestones in the shorter formats. His Duleep Trophy campaign provides an opportunity to demonstrate that his aggressive batting can also be adapted to the demands of first-class cricket.

The Chennai conditions could provide a different challenge. The Chepauk surface is expected to become increasingly helpful to spin as the match progresses, while the heat and humidity could test the players physically over five days. The fact that the venue has not hosted a first-class match since 2024 also makes the exact behaviour of the pitch difficult to predict.

Ishan Kishan leads a confident East Zone

East Zone enter the final with considerable momentum.

Captain Ishan Kishan played an important role in the semi-final victory over Central Zone, remaining unbeaten on 39 as his team chased down a target of 159 with four wickets in hand. The wicketkeeper-batter’s attacking approach gives East Zone an experienced presence in a batting line-up that also includes Abhimanyu Easwaran, Kumar Kushagra, Virat Singh and Sudip Gharami.

The bowling department will be led by veteran Mohammed Shami, who has rediscovered some rhythm during the tournament. Shami is also set to make his 100th first-class appearance, underlining his longevity and experience. He has taken 382 wickets in first-class cricket and remains one of the most experienced players in the East Zone squad.

Mukesh Kumar provides another dependable pace option, while Shahbaz Ahmed and Anukul Roy give East Zone additional spin resources.

Kishan has also backed Shami’s hunger and dedication, saying age should not be treated as a barrier to a potential return to India’s national side.

Tilak Varma aims to lead South Zone to another title

South Zone will enter the final with a formidable record in the Duleep Trophy.

The side has won the competition 14 times, including 12 outright titles and two shared trophies. Its most recent outright triumph came in 2023. East Zone, meanwhile, have won the tournament twice, with their last title coming in 2012-13.

Tilak Varma has been central to South Zone’s run this season.

The captain produced an unbeaten century in the first innings of the semi-final against North Zone and then returned with an unbeaten 51 to guide his side to victory in the chase. His form gives South Zone an important advantage in a batting line-up that includes experienced domestic performers.

South Zone have also added two players with recent international experience. Devdutt Padikkal and Mohammed Siraj have joined the squad for the final. Padikkal arrives after an impressive Test series against Sri Lanka, where he scored two centuries, while Siraj adds considerable pace-bowling experience.

However, KL Rahul will not play the final. Tilak Varma confirmed his absence ahead of the match.

Duleep Trophy final comes before Afghanistan T20Is

The timing of the final adds another layer of interest because several players involved will soon switch from red-ball cricket to India’s T20I commitments.

Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma are among those expected to move directly from the five-day Duleep Trophy final into India’s T20I series against Afghanistan.
