Manchester: England have announced their playing XI for the second T20I against India, set to be played at Old Trafford on Saturday, making two key changes to their lineup. Star pacer Jofra Archer returns to the side, while Josh Tongue is set to make his T20I debut. Saqib Mahmood and Luke Wood have been dropped from the squad.
The five-match T20I series remains finely balanced after the first match ended in a no-result due to persistent rain. Both teams will be keen to gain an early advantage in the series as they head into the crucial Manchester encounter.
England make tactical changes
England’s decision to bring back Jofra Archer adds firepower to their pace attack. Archer, known for his express pace and ability to deliver in high-pressure situations, is expected to play a vital role against a strong Indian batting lineup.
Meanwhile, Josh Tongue’s inclusion marks a significant moment in his career as he prepares to make his T20I debut. The young pacer has impressed in domestic cricket and now gets an opportunity to prove himself on the international stage.
The exclusion of Saqib Mahmood and Luke Wood suggests a strategic shift by England, possibly aimed at strengthening both their bowling depth and overall balance in the playing XI.
First T20I washed out after India’s strong batting display
The opening match of the series saw India put up an impressive total before rain intervened. After winning the toss and opting to bat first, India stuck with their established opening combination, leaving young prospect Vaibhav Sooryavanshi on the sidelines.
However, India’s innings began on a shaky note. Sanju Samson was dismissed for just 1 run, while Ishan Kishan was run out for a duck following a costly mix-up. The early setbacks put India under pressure in the powerplay.
Abhishek Sharma’s explosive knock turns the tide
India’s innings was revived by Abhishek Sharma, who delivered a stunning counter-attacking performance. The left-handed batter smashed a rapid 59 off just 24 balls, including four sixes and six boundaries.
His aggressive approach shifted the momentum in India’s favour, putting the England bowlers on the back foot. Abhishek’s innings came to an end when he was trapped LBW by Sam Curran, but not before providing India with a much-needed boost.
Shreyas Iyer anchors, Shivam Dube finishes strong
Following Abhishek’s departure, Shreyas Iyer took control of the innings with a composed and calculated knock. He scored 67 runs off 47 deliveries, ensuring stability in the middle overs.
Iyer built crucial partnerships, adding 36 runs with Tilak Varma and 41 runs with Shivam Dube. His innings laid the foundation for a strong finish.
Shivam Dube capitalised in the death overs, playing a powerful unbeaten knock of 42 off 21 balls. His innings, which included three sixes and two boundaries, propelled India to a competitive total of 189/7 in 20 overs.
Rain denies result, series still open
Despite India’s strong batting performance, rain played spoilsport once again. England did not get the opportunity to chase the target, and the match was eventually called off, resulting in a no-result.
With the series still wide open, both teams will be eager to deliver a complete performance in the second T20I. England will look to utilise their revamped bowling attack, while India will aim to build on their batting momentum.
The Manchester clash now becomes crucial in setting the tone for the remainder of the series, with both sides eyeing a decisive lead.
