Bambolim, Goa: After a forgettable ISL season last year, Bengaluru FC returned to the pitch to face Northeast United FC as their first opponents of the 2021-22 Hero ISL.

The match got off to a shaky start, with both teams looking edgy. However, Cleiton Silva scored the opener in the 14th minute, putting BFC in the lead.

Just minutes later, former BFCian Deshorn Brown, playing for Northeast United restored the lead with a clean strike beating the tall BFC custodian Gurpreet Singh Sandhu.

In the 23rd minute, with the ball ricocheting off the upright and the ensuing confusion, NEUFC defender Mashoor made a major mess in the penalty area and ended up conceding an own goal.

Just minutes later, almost like a game of ping-pong, Coureur restored parity for Northeast with the scoreline reading 2-2 at the 25th minute mark.

The blues continued to press, and this momentum soon bore rewards in the form of a classy Jayesh Rane goal. Having the lead, the blues decided to keep things tight at the back to ensure that they went into the half-time break with a lead of 3-2.

The second half began as a much quieter affair, with both teams preferring to take it easier on the ball. However in the 81st minute, Prince Ibara managed to break away from his marker and score a nimble low shot past a helpless Subhashish on goal, making it 4-2 in favour of the blues.

Several attempts by NEUFC to get back on level terms failed, with the blues defence continuing to remain resolute, while the attackers kept pressing at the NEUFC goal. However, things remained as is until the regulation time, and beyond.

Despite the added 5 minutes of extra time, neither side could add on to the goals tally, with the scoreline ending 4-2.

Bengaluru FC face Odisha FC next on 24th at the Tilak Maidan in Vasco.

14 – Cleiton Silva
