Chandigarh: Former India U-19 and Punjab cricketer Amanpreet Singh Gill passed away in Chandigarh on Wednesday at the age of 36, leaving the Indian cricket fraternity in shock and mourning. The cause of death has not yet been officially disclosed.

Gill, a medium pacer who represented Punjab in domestic cricket, was also a former teammate of Virat Kohli at the India U-19 level. Tributes poured in from former teammates, cricket associations, and franchises following the news of his untimely demise.

Punjab Cricket Association expresses grief

The Punjab Cricket Association confirmed the news through an official statement on social media.

“Punjab Cricket Association deeply mourns the sad demise of Amanpreet Singh Gill, former Punjab cricketer and member, Senior Selection Committee, Punjab,” the association posted.

“Our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and loved ones. May Waheguru grant eternal peace to the departed soul and strength to the family in this difficult time,” the statement added.

Gill had also served as a member of Punjab’s senior selection committee after retiring from active cricket.

Yuvraj Singh pays emotional tribute

Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, who shared the dressing room with Gill during their early cricketing years, expressed sadness over the loss.

“Deeply saddened to hear about Amanpreet Singh Gill’s passing. I shared the dressing room with him in our early days; he was a quiet, hardworking cricketer who loved the game. My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace. Om Shanti,” Yuvraj wrote on social media.

The tribute reflected the respect Gill commanded among fellow cricketers despite his relatively brief professional career.

Career with Punjab and India U-19

Amanpreet Singh Gill represented Punjab in six first-class matches, during which he picked up 11 wickets as a medium pacer. Though he did not go on to establish a lengthy domestic or international career, he remained closely associated with cricket in Punjab.

Gill also played five Youth ODIs and one Youth Test for India in 2007. During his youth international stint, he dismissed former Sri Lanka all-rounder Thisara Perera in the longer format.

However, he narrowly missed out on selection for the India U-19 squad led by Virat Kohli that went on to win the 2008 ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup.

Association with IPL franchise

Gill was also part of the inaugural Indian Premier League season in 2008, representing Punjab Kings, then known as Kings XI Punjab.

Following the news of his death, Punjab Kings also shared a condolence message.

“Deeply saddened by the passing of Amanpreet Singh Shergill, who proudly represented Punjab and was a part of the Punjab Kings family. Our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the entire cricketing fraternity,” the franchise posted on Instagram.

Cricket fraternity mourns loss

Gill’s death has saddened many in Punjab cricket circles, where he was regarded as a dedicated cricketer and administrator. Though he did not achieve major international success, he remained deeply involved in nurturing cricket talent in the state after his playing days.

His passing at a relatively young age has once again highlighted the emotional bonds shared within India’s cricketing community, where former teammates and associations continue to support one another beyond the field.

Amanpreet Singh Gill’s untimely death has left a void in Punjab cricket and among those who knew him personally and professionally. Remembered as a hardworking and humble cricketer, Gill’s contribution to Punjab cricket — both as a player and selector — will continue to be cherished by the cricketing fraternity.
