New Delhi: Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has offered candid advice to current head coach Gautam Gambhir, suggesting that while his competitive spirit is an asset, he does not need to come across as “rude or rough” to succeed at the highest level.
Gambhir, known for his intense and aggressive approach both as a player and coach, has often been in the spotlight for his on-field demeanour. While this attitude has contributed to his success, it has also led to high-profile confrontations, including past exchanges with Virat Kohli during the Indian Premier League.
Ganguly backs Gambhir’s intent
Speaking in an interview, Ganguly acknowledged Gambhir’s competitive nature but emphasised that he can achieve the same results without appearing harsh.
“He may be rude or rough, but he is a competitor. He does not need to be rude because he is a good man,” Ganguly said, reflecting on his experience of playing alongside Gambhir for India.
At the same time, the former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president praised Gambhir’s approach to team-building. According to Ganguly, the coach has successfully fostered a culture that prioritises the team over individual performances.
“He speaks the right things about his team and tries to create an environment of team, not individuals,” he added.
Strong start as India head coach
Gambhir has made an impressive start to his coaching tenure, guiding India to major international success. Under his leadership, India secured titles at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, making him the first India head coach to achieve this feat.
These victories have strengthened his reputation as a results-driven coach capable of delivering in high-pressure situations.
Bigger challenges ahead
Despite the early success, Ganguly believes that tougher tests lie ahead for Gambhir, particularly in overseas conditions and longer formats of the game.
He pointed out that the Cricket World Cup 2027 in South Africa will be a crucial benchmark for Gambhir’s leadership in white-ball cricket.
“Conditions there will test him, but I am confident he will get it right with the team he has,” Ganguly said.
In Test cricket, however, Ganguly stressed that improvements are necessary. He suggested that Gambhir should focus less on pitch conditions and more on overall team performance.
Focus on red-ball improvements
Ganguly highlighted India’s recent struggles in Test matches, noting that an overemphasis on pitch preparation can sometimes backfire. He advised Gambhir to adopt a more balanced approach.
“He needs to get the wicket out of his system. Good wickets will produce good results,” Ganguly remarked, referencing India’s performances in recent series, including against England.
The comments underline the importance of adaptability and long-term planning as Gambhir continues to shape the team across formats.
Upcoming assignments
Following the conclusion of IPL 2026, India are set to begin their next international assignments, including series against Afghanistan and Ireland, followed by an extended white-ball tour of England.
These fixtures will provide Gambhir with further opportunities to refine his strategies and address areas of concern, particularly in Test cricket.
Conclusion
Sourav Ganguly’s remarks reflect both confidence and constructive criticism towards Gautam Gambhir’s coaching style. While acknowledging his achievements and competitive drive, the former captain has urged him to adopt a calmer approach.
As India prepare for future challenges, Gambhir’s ability to balance intensity with composure could play a key role in sustaining the team’s success across formats.
