As the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) ramps up its search for the next head coach of the men’s national team, several notable former cricketers have emerged as potential candidates. Among them, VVS Laxman and Gautam Gambhir have been prominently mentioned in discussions following the announcement of Rahul Dravid’s impending departure. Additionally, renowned figures like Ricky Ponting, Justin Langer, and Stephen Fleming are reportedly on the board’s radar.
Recent reports suggest that Gautam Gambhir, currently serving as the mentor for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), is highly interested in the head coach position. Despite only being in his first year with KKR, Gambhir is said to have expressed keenness in applying for the role, albeit with a condition. It’s reported that Gambhir is insistent on receiving a guarantee of selection before formally submitting his application. He appears unwilling to merely throw his hat into the ring without assurance of being chosen as Dravid’s successor.
With the application deadline set for May 27, the number of potential candidates who have applied remains undisclosed. While rumors circulated regarding the BCCI’s outreach to figures like Ponting and Langer, the board denied such claims, contradicting the assertions made by the individuals themselves.
