Mumbai: Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has backed Rohit Sharma to prove his credentials as India’s opening batter for the ODI World Cup 2027, stating that the upcoming series against England will be a crucial opportunity for the veteran skipper.
India are set to face England in a three-match ODI series from July 14 to 19, marking the return of senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, subject to availability. With both players now focusing on a single format, the spotlight will firmly be on their performances as the team begins preparations for the next 50-over World Cup.
Gavaskar, speaking during an interaction organised by Sony Sports, said that Rohit is well aware of his position within the team and the expectations from the selectors and management. According to him, there has been clear communication between the stakeholders and the Indian captain.
“When has there not been talk about Rohit Sharma? There has always been discussion around him,” Gavaskar said. “He knows exactly where he stands and what he needs to do in the lead-up to the World Cup.”
England series a key platform
The former India captain emphasised that the England series offers Rohit an ideal platform to demonstrate that he remains a dependable opener even as the next World Cup approaches.
Gavaskar noted that consistency over the next 18 months will be critical for Rohit if he wishes to retain his place at the top of the order. He added that Rohit’s talent and experience make him capable of handling any pressure situation.
“I do not think he is the kind of player who feels pressure. With the ability and experience he has, this England tour is a very good platform for him to show that he will still be opening the batting for India in the World Cup,” Gavaskar said.
Scrutiny never ends in Indian cricket
Gavaskar also highlighted the intense scrutiny that Indian cricketers face throughout their careers. He explained that the pressure begins from a player’s debut and continues regardless of experience or seniority.
“When you are a young player, the scrutiny is about whether you can handle international pressure. That scrutiny never really ends in Indian cricket,” he said.
He added that experienced players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli understand how to deal with such expectations. According to Gavaskar, the only way to silence critics is through consistent performance.
“The way forward is simple — score runs, contribute in the field, and use your experience to guide the team,” he added.
Focus shifts to fitness after 35
Gavaskar pointed out that for players above the age of 35, the nature of scrutiny changes. While younger players are judged on temperament, senior players are assessed more on their physical fitness and conditioning.
“As you grow older, the focus shifts more towards fitness rather than temperament. But with the experience they have, players like Rohit and Kohli can manage this quite easily,” he said.
Strong future for India’s white-ball team
Looking ahead, Gavaskar expressed confidence in the current Indian white-ball squad. He believes that the core group of players has the potential to build a lasting legacy over the next decade.
“There might be small changes here and there, but the core of this team can stay together for the next 8 to 10 years and create something special,” he said.
Surprise over Ben Stokes’ retirement timing
Gavaskar also spoke about England all-rounder Ben Stokes’ retirement from international cricket, expressing surprise at the timing of the decision.
“I expected him to retire at the end of the home season after the Pakistan series. The timing is a bit surprising,” he said.
He added that the absence of a player of Stokes’ calibre will be a significant advantage for opposition teams.
Conclusion
As India begin their preparations for the ODI World Cup 2027, the focus will remain on experienced players like Rohit Sharma to deliver consistently. With a crucial series against England ahead, Rohit now has the opportunity to reaffirm his place and lead India’s batting line-up into the next global tournament.
