Koppal: For the first time, Sri Gavisiddheshwara Jatra at the Gavi Mutt featured traditional sports events, attracting enthusiastic participation from devotees. Activities such as Mallakambha, stone-lifting contests, police canine demonstrations, wrestling bouts, and marathon races captivated the audience.
The event, dubbed ‘Gavisri Kreeda Utsav,’ was organized in collaboration with local institutions, business leaders, and sports organizations, celebrating indigenous sports. Held at the Gavi Math grounds, the event showcased exceptional performances by teams from Jnanasindhu Andha Makkala Shale (Hole Alur), Yoga Mallakamba (Siruguppa), and Mahila Mallakamba (Koppal).
Children demonstrated remarkable agility, performing intricate Mallakambha asanas and rope climbs with confidence. Young athletes displayed strength in the stone-lifting competition, lifting ‘Sangrani’ stones weighing between 50 to 100 kg, drawing cheers from the crowd.
The wrestling events were a highlight, with seasoned wrestler Karthik Kate from Ranebennur clinching the coveted ‘Koppal Kesari’ title. In the women’s category, champions included Vaishnavi Kala (Gadag), Varalakshmi and Srushti (Davanagere), Sathya Marishanthaveer (Koppal), and Savita Siddu (Haliyal). A closely contested match between Pratiksha (Mudhol) and Bhuvaneshwari Koliwada ended in a tie, showcasing immense talent.
The fusion of spirituality and traditional sports made the event memorable, highlighting Koppal’s vibrant cultural heritage.
