Ahmedabad: Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill delivered a clear message to IPL 2026 rivals after his side’s dominant 82-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), underlining that smart assessment of conditions — not blind aggression — remains the key to success in the tournament.
In a season where teams have often chased high totals and prioritised explosive starts, Gill’s measured approach stood out as Gujarat Titans defended a seemingly modest total of 168 with remarkable ease at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
Gill emphasises adaptability over aggression
Reflecting on the victory, Gill revealed that the team’s strategy was built around reading the pitch conditions early rather than chasing an unrealistic total.
“Teams batting first have done well, and it worked out for us,” Gill said after the match. “On this kind of wicket, we always knew 170 would be tricky. If we bowled well, we would always be in the game.”
The GT skipper disclosed that discussions in the dressing room were focused on reaching the 160–170 range, which they believed would be competitive on a two-paced surface.
“We spoke about getting somewhere close to 160-170. It wasn’t going to be easy for them, especially with our bowling attack. That was the plan,” he added.
Crucial partnership anchors GT innings
Gujarat Titans were under pressure during the middle phase of their innings, but a vital partnership between Sai Sudharsan and Washington Sundar helped stabilise the innings and push the total to a defendable score.
Sudharsan played a composed knock, while Sundar provided the necessary momentum, ensuring the team reached a competitive total despite challenging batting conditions.
Gill acknowledged the importance of that stand, noting that at one stage even reaching 170 looked difficult.
“The way Sai and Washi batted was crucial. At one point, it looked tough to even get close to that score,” he said.
Bowlers execute plan to perfection
While the batters laid the foundation, it was Gujarat’s bowling unit that completely dismantled SRH. The Titans’ pace attack made full use of the conditions, striking early and maintaining relentless pressure.
Gill praised his bowlers, especially for their consistency in the powerplay, which has been a defining feature of GT’s campaign this season.
“The way we bowled in the powerplay has been excellent. Credit to our bowlers for executing the plans perfectly,” he said.
The disciplined bowling effort ensured SRH never recovered from early setbacks, eventually collapsing for just 86 runs.
Flexible game plan sets GT apart
One of the key takeaways from Gill’s remarks was Gujarat Titans’ flexible approach, which avoids sticking to a fixed playing style.
“Honestly, it’s about being consistent and ruthless. We are not a team that plays a particular brand of cricket,” Gill explained. “We assess the conditions. If it’s a 240-run wicket, we go for it. But if it’s not easy, even 170 becomes a very good score.”
This adaptability, according to Gill, is what differentiates GT from other teams that may rely heavily on aggressive batting regardless of conditions.
Holder’s experience proves vital
Gill also highlighted the contribution of experienced all-rounder Jason Holder, who played a key role in SRH’s collapse with a disciplined spell in the middle overs.
“He’s such an experienced campaigner. The kind of lengths he’s been hitting and his consistency have been outstanding,” Gill said. “Bowling four overs in these conditions isn’t easy, but he’s doing a terrific job.”
Holder’s control and ability to exploit the pitch conditions added to the effectiveness of GT’s bowling attack, complementing the early breakthroughs.
Conclusion: GT send strong warning to rivals
With this comprehensive win, Gujarat Titans have not only strengthened their position in the points table but also sent a strong tactical message to other teams in the competition.
Gill’s emphasis on adaptability and situational awareness highlights a mature leadership approach, one that could prove decisive as the tournament heads into its crucial final phase.
As other teams continue to rely on power-hitting and high-scoring games, Gujarat Titans’ balanced and calculated strategy could give them a significant edge in the race for the IPL 2026 title.
