Gopal Kharvi, a celebrated swimmer from Gundmi and Guinness World Record holder, has been selected to represent Karnataka at the upcoming national-level swimming competition in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. His selection comes after an outstanding performance at the 25th State Masters Swimming Championship, where he bagged six medals. Kharvi won gold in the 400m freestyle and 50m butterfly, and secured silver in the 200m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 4x50m freestyle relay, and 4x100m medley relay.

Known for his incredible 2013 Guinness World Record, where he swam 3.71 km in the Arabian Sea with his hands and legs tied, Kharvi serves as a swimming coach at Ajjarkad Swimming Pool in Udupi. His accomplishments have earned him numerous prestigious awards, including the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award and the Karnataka Kreedaratna Award.

Adding to his legacy, Kharvi’s life has been included as a lesson in the 9th-grade Konkani textbook, recognizing his contributions to sports.
