Orlando: French forward Antoine Griezmann is set to join Orlando City SC from Atletico Madrid in 2026, marking a high-profile move to Major League Soccer. The transfer will also see him reunite in the league with former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi.
Both clubs confirmed the deal on Tuesday, with Griezmann set to officially join Orlando City in July 2026 when the MLS secondary transfer window opens. The contract will run through the 2027–28 season, with an option to extend for the 2028–29 campaign.
A decorated career in Europe
Griezmann leaves Atletico Madrid as the club’s all-time leading scorer, bringing an end to a highly successful spell in Spain. Over his professional career, which includes stints with Atletico, FC Barcelona and Real Sociedad, the Frenchman has amassed 298 goals and 132 assists in 792 appearances.
His time at Atletico Madrid stands out as the most productive phase of his career. He scored 211 goals for the club and played a pivotal role in their major title wins, including the Spanish Super Cup in 2014, as well as the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Super Cup in 2018.
Even in the ongoing season, the 35-year-old has remained effective, contributing 13 goals and four assists across competitions.
Move confirmed by Orlando City
In an official statement, Orlando City described Griezmann as a “global soccer icon” and confirmed that he would join the club as a Designated Player, subject to medical clearance and necessary documentation, including his International Transfer Certificate and P-1 visa.
The move reflects the growing appeal of MLS as a destination for top European talent, particularly experienced players seeking a new challenge in the latter stages of their careers.
International success with France
Griezmann also enjoyed an illustrious international career with France national football team. He earned 137 caps and scored 44 goals, playing a central role in the team’s triumph at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
In addition, he was part of the squad that won the UEFA Nations League in 2021. One of his most remarkable achievements was a record streak of 84 consecutive appearances for France between 2017 and 2024, highlighting his consistency and fitness at the highest level.
Griezmann excited for new chapter
Speaking after the announcement, Griezmann expressed his enthusiasm about the move and the opportunity to be part of Orlando City’s project.
“I am very excited to begin this next chapter of my career with Orlando City,” he said. “From my first conversations with the club, I could feel a strong ambition and a clear vision for the future, and that really spoke to me.”
He added that he is looking forward to settling in the city, connecting with supporters, and contributing to the team’s ambitions.
Reunion with Messi in MLS
One of the most intriguing aspects of Griezmann’s move is his reunion — albeit as a rival — with Inter Miami CF star Lionel Messi.
The two previously played together at Barcelona and shared a strong on-field understanding. Their presence in MLS adds further star power to the league, which has seen a surge in global attention in recent years.
Griezmann’s arrival is expected to boost Orlando City’s attacking strength while also elevating the club’s international profile.
MLS continues to grow
Griezmann’s signing underlines MLS’s ongoing evolution into a competitive and commercially attractive league. With global stars like Messi already drawing attention, the addition of another high-profile name strengthens the league’s appeal to fans worldwide.
For Orlando City, the acquisition signals intent — not just to compete, but to build a squad capable of challenging for honours.
As the 2026 season progresses, all eyes will be on how quickly Griezmann adapts to the league and how his presence influences Orlando City’s fortunes.
