New Delhi: The IPL 2022 champions, Gujarat Titans, have announced Shubman Gill as the captain for the upcoming IPL 2024 season. The right-handed opener will be stepping into the leadership role, succeeding Hardik Pandya, who was traded to the Mumbai Indians.
This marks Gill’s inaugural stint as a captain in senior men’s cricket, and he expressed his excitement in a statement issued by the franchise. “I am delighted and proud to assume the captaincy of Gujarat Titans and thank the franchise for their trust in me to lead such a fine team. We have had two exceptional seasons, and I keenly look forward to leading the team with our exciting brand of cricket,” said Gill.
In his debut season with Gujarat Titans, Gill played a pivotal role under Hardik’s leadership, contributing 483 runs in 16 games at an average of 34.50 and a strike rate of 132.33, which culminated in the team winning the trophy.
Gill continued his stellar performance in IPL 2023, finishing as the tournament’s leading run-scorer with an outstanding tally of 890 runs in 17 matches at an average of 59.33 and a strike rate of 157.80. His remarkable innings included three centuries and four half-centuries, propelling Gujarat Titans to the runners-up position.
