Mumbai: Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya has reportedly attracted fresh interest from teams ahead of the IPL 2027 retention deadline, with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) among the franchises linked with a possible trade for the India all-rounder.

However, Pandya’s potential move to CSK could be complicated by the appointment of Zaheer Khan as the franchise’s head coach. Reports have suggested that the two have had differences dating back to Zaheer’s time with the Mumbai Indians management.

According to a report cited by NDTV Sports, Mumbai Indians have received inquiries from multiple franchises regarding the 32-year-old all-rounder. One team is understood to have shown particularly strong interest, while discussions involving CSK and KKR have also taken place.

No trade has been confirmed, and the situation could change before the retention deadline.

Fresh interest in Hardik Pandya

Pandya remains one of the most sought-after Indian all-rounders in T20 cricket because of his ability to contribute with both bat and ball.

Despite concerns surrounding his fitness, his value to a franchise remains significant. When fully fit, Pandya provides a combination of power hitting, seam bowling and leadership that few Indian players can match.

The report states that several teams have approached Mumbai Indians regarding a possible trade. CSK and KKR have been identified among the franchises that have discussed the possibility with the five-time IPL champions.

The development has once again fuelled speculation over Pandya’s future with Mumbai Indians, although the franchise has not indicated that a trade is imminent.

Zaheer Khan factor complicates CSK possibility

One of the biggest factors in the CSK-Pandya speculation is Zaheer Khan.

Zaheer was appointed head coach of CSK after the 2026 season. His previous association with Mumbai Indians is particularly relevant because reports have previously suggested differences between him and Pandya during Zaheer’s time with the Mumbai franchise.

The latest report indicates that Pandya’s chances of moving to CSK may have reduced following Zaheer’s appointment.

At the same time, the report cautions against assuming that previous professional relationships will automatically determine the outcome. A new franchise environment could potentially change the dynamics between the two.

With the retention deadline approaching, CSK and Mumbai Indians would have limited time to work out the terms of any potential deal.

CSK had previously shown interest

The possibility of Pandya joining CSK is not entirely new.

Reports of CSK’s interest in the Mumbai Indians captain surfaced during the previous trade discussions as well. In July, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan was asked about reports linking the franchise with Pandya amid speculation that several teams were interested in acquiring him.

CSK’s interest would be understandable from a cricketing perspective. The franchise has undergone significant squad changes and has been looking to build a competitive side around a combination of experienced players and younger talent.

Pandya’s all-round abilities and leadership experience could add another dimension to the CSK setup if a deal were eventually completed.

However, the financial and strategic aspects of any trade would have to be considered by both franchises.

Mumbai Indians face an important decision

Mumbai Indians will also have to assess Pandya’s importance to their long-term plans.

Pandya remains one of the franchise’s highest-value players. He was retained by Mumbai Indians for IPL 2026 at ₹16.35 crore, according to the official IPL retention list.

Mumbai’s retained core also includes Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma and Tilak Varma, giving the franchise a strong group of established Indian players.

Any decision to trade Pandya would therefore have major implications for the team’s balance and leadership structure.

Mumbai Indians would need to determine whether the return from a trade is sufficient to compensate for losing an Indian all-rounder who can influence matches in multiple departments.

Hardik’s fitness remains a concern

Fitness has also become an important part of the discussion surrounding Pandya.

The all-rounder has faced recurring fitness issues in recent seasons, particularly with his bowling workload. Nevertheless, his ability to contribute in both departments continues to make him a valuable player.

The latest report says the Indian team management is also monitoring his fitness, with Pandya reportedly set to miss the upcoming tour of New Zealand.

His fitness will be particularly important ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup, where he remains part of India’s plans when fully fit.

That international importance could also influence how Mumbai Indians and other franchises assess his value.

KKR also in the picture

While CSK has attracted considerable attention, Kolkata Knight Riders are also reportedly among the teams interested in Pandya.

KKR could offer another potential destination if Mumbai Indians decide to explore a trade.

The franchise has significant room to manoeuvre in its squad planning and would have to weigh Pandya’s value against the resources required to complete a deal.

The existence of interest from multiple franchises could also strengthen Mumbai’s negotiating position if the trade discussions progress.

Retention deadline adds urgency

The coming weeks could prove crucial as franchises finalise their plans for the next IPL season.

The report states that the retention deadline is November 15, leaving teams a limited window to negotiate potential player movements before their squads are finalised.

A trade involving Pandya would require agreement between the player and the franchises involved, along with the necessary IPL formalities.

Until those steps are completed, the India all-rounder’s future remains uncertain.

What a CSK move could mean

If Pandya were to move to CSK, he would bring experience of leading an IPL franchise as well as a proven record with both bat and ball.

CSK already has an established all-rounder in Shivam Dube and a number of younger players, while the franchise has retained Ruturaj Gaikwad, MS Dhoni, Sanju Samson and other key members of its squad.

Adding Pandya could significantly alter the team’s balance and provide another Indian player capable of contributing in multiple roles.

But the reported Zaheer-Pandya history could make CSK’s decision more complicated than a straightforward cricketing assessment.

No confirmed trade yet

For now, Hardik Pandya remains a Mumbai Indians player, and there has been no official confirmation that he will move to CSK, KKR or another franchise.

The latest reports only indicate that discussions and inquiries have taken place.

Much will depend on Mumbai Indians’ long-term plans, Pandya’s fitness, the demands of interested franchises and the negotiations between the parties.

The Zaheer Khan factor adds another layer of intrigue to the CSK possibility, but professional equations can evolve with time and circumstances.

With the retention deadline approaching, Pandya’s future is likely to remain one of the biggest talking points in the IPL trade market.
