Bengaluru: India’s premier seam-bowling all-rounder Hardik Pandya is set to make a limited return to domestic cricket, featuring in two of Baroda’s final three league matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy in January, before being rested for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand starting on January 11.

Sources confirmed that Pandya will turn out for Baroda in their matches against Vidarbha on January 3 and Chandigarh on January 8. However, he will skip the January 6 fixture against Jammu & Kashmir as part of a carefully planned workload management strategy ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup.

“Yes, it’s confirmed that Hardik will play two Vijay Hazare Trophy matches. He will not feature in the Jammu & Kashmir game as the team management wants to ensure he gets adequate rest,” a source familiar with the development said.

Focus on workload management

Although Pandya was keen to represent India in the ODI series against New Zealand, the team think-tank has advised him to rest from the 50-over format at this stage. The decision has been taken keeping in mind the packed international calendar and the importance of having Pandya fully fit for the upcoming T20I series and the T20 World Cup.

“Hardik wanted to play the ODIs against New Zealand, but the management felt it was better to rest him. They want him in peak condition for the T20Is and the T20 World Cup,” the source added.

The three-match ODI series against New Zealand will be followed closely by a five-match T20I series beginning in Nagpur on January 21. The T20 World Cup is scheduled to start on February 7, making workload management a top priority for the Indian team management.

Last ODI appearance and injury comeback

Pandya last played an ODI for India in March, when he featured in the 2025 Champions Trophy final against New Zealand in Dubai. Since then, his appearances have been carefully monitored due to injury concerns.

He made a successful return to full all-round duties during India’s 3-1 T20I series victory over South Africa in December. That series marked his comeback after recovering from a quadriceps injury sustained during the Asia Cup Super Fours match against Sri Lanka in September. The injury had ruled him out of the Asia Cup final against Pakistan and India’s subsequent 2-1 T20I series win in Australia.

Bumrah also managed cautiously

Alongside Pandya, ace fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is also being handled cautiously by the team management. Bumrah, who is considered indispensable to India’s T20 World Cup title defence, has been exempted from playing Vijay Hazare Trophy matches altogether.

Both Pandya and Bumrah are expected to return to international action in the T20I series against New Zealand, forming the backbone of India’s bowling and all-round strength heading into the global tournament.

Selection meeting and leadership options

India’s ODI squad for the New Zealand series will be announced after the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee meets in the first week of January. There is a strong possibility that Shubman Gill could return as captain for the ODI series, which will be played in Vadodara, Rajkot and Indore.

Gill had missed India’s recent 2-1 ODI series win over South Africa due to a neck injury but is expected to be fit in time for the New Zealand series.

Fitness updates on key players

The selectors are also awaiting an official update on Shreyas Iyer, who has been working on his recovery and fitness at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Iyer has been sidelined since suffering a serious spleen injury while attempting a diving catch to dismiss Alex Carey during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney.

Another area of discussion for the selectors is the second wicketkeeper’s slot in the ODI and T20I squads. With Ishan Kishan and Dhruv Jurel in strong form and both in contention for the T20 World Cup, competition has intensified for incumbent keeper Rishabh Pant.

Conclusion

Hardik Pandya’s selective participation in domestic cricket underlines the Indian team management’s emphasis on balancing match practice with long-term fitness. With the T20 World Cup approaching rapidly, ensuring the availability of key players like Pandya and Bumrah remains central to India’s title defence strategy.
