New Delhi: The selection of pacer Harshit Rana in India’s T20I squads for upcoming international assignments has sparked criticism, with former India opener Sadagoppan Ramesh questioning the decision taken by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced squads for the T20I tours of Ireland and England, along with the Asian Games 2026. Harshit Rana, who has been out of action due to a knee injury, was included in all three squads despite not featuring in any competitive match since his surgery.

Ramesh questions selection logic

Expressing his concerns, Ramesh said the decision goes against the precedent set by the BCCI, where players returning from injury are typically required to prove their fitness through domestic cricket.

“How have you selected Harshit Rana? I don’t think he has played any domestic cricket after knee surgery. Nobody knows the answer to this,” Ramesh said in a video shared on social media.

He further added that such decisions could send a confusing message to other players who have been asked to follow a structured path back into the national team after injury layoffs.

Concerns over consistency in selection policy

Ramesh pointed out that several senior players, including Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, were previously required to participate in domestic cricket to demonstrate match fitness before being considered for selection.

He also cited examples such as Hardik Pandya and Mohammed Shami, who had to prove their readiness after injuries before making comebacks. According to Ramesh, even current T20I captain Shreyas Iyer had to play domestic tournaments like the Vijay Hazare Trophy to establish his fitness ahead of international assignments.

“There are many such examples. The precedent has been clear — players returning from injury must prove their fitness in domestic cricket. That standard does not seem to have been followed in this case,” he said.

Harshit’s injury setback and comeback

Harshit Rana was initially expected to be part of India’s squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. However, he suffered a knee injury during a warm-up match, which ruled him out of the tournament.

The injury also forced him to miss the entire IPL 2026 season, as he underwent surgery and subsequent rehabilitation. Despite his absence from competitive cricket, the selectors have shown faith in his potential by including him directly in the national squads.

Balancing potential and fairness

The decision has triggered a broader debate around selection policies and consistency. While selectors often back promising players based on talent and future prospects, critics argue that bypassing established protocols could affect team morale and fairness.

Supporters of the move, however, may view it as a strategic decision aimed at fast-tracking a young pacer who has already shown glimpses of his abilities at the highest level.

Conclusion

As India prepares for a busy T20I calendar, the focus will not only be on performances on the field but also on the transparency and consistency of selection decisions. Harshit Rana’s inclusion has undoubtedly raised questions, and his performances, if given an opportunity, will be closely watched to justify the selectors’ call. The debate highlights the delicate balance between nurturing talent and maintaining fairness within the team structure.
