Ahmedabad: Gujarat Titans all-rounder Jason Holder credited teammates Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada for setting the tone with the ball as GT secured a four-wicket win over Punjab Kings in their Indian Premier League 2026 clash on Sunday.

Holder starred with a match-winning spell of 4/24 in four overs, earning the Player of the Match award and playing a decisive role in restricting PBKS to a manageable total.

Early breakthroughs set the tone

GT’s bowling unit delivered a disciplined performance, with Siraj striking in the very first over of the match. The Indian pacer dismissed Priyansh Arya and Cooper Connolly early, putting PBKS under immediate pressure.

Rabada complemented the effort by removing Prabhsimran Singh during the powerplay, ensuring that PBKS never fully capitalised on the early overs. Their breakthroughs allowed Holder to operate with greater control during the middle phase.

Reflecting on the performance, Holder said the early wickets made a significant difference. “Credit to both Siraj and KG (Kagiso Rabada). Their efforts have been outstanding. It makes my job easier coming in during the middle overs,” he said after the match.

Holder’s decisive spell

Coming into the attack at a crucial juncture, Holder maintained pressure and picked up key wickets. He dismissed PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer, along with Nehal Wadhera, Marcus Stoinis and Xavier Bartlett, breaking the backbone of the opposition’s batting lineup.

Despite a strong 79-run partnership between Suryansh Shedge (57 off 29) and Marcus Stoinis (40 off 31), GT’s bowlers ensured that PBKS were restricted to 163/9 in their allotted overs.

Holder emphasised that while early wickets helped, execution remained key. “The main thing is to keep pressure on and make it difficult for them to score,” he added.

Sudharsan, Sundar guide the chase

In response, GT faced early setbacks in their chase, but Sai Sudharsan anchored the innings with a composed 57 off 41 balls.

The finishing touch was provided by Washington Sundar, who remained unbeaten on 40 off 23 deliveries. Sundar sealed the victory in style, hitting a six in the final over to guide GT home with four wickets in hand.

Points table implications

The win proved crucial for Gujarat Titans as they climbed to sixth place on the points table with 12 points. Meanwhile, Punjab Kings, despite the defeat, continued to hold the top position with 13 points.

Focus on adaptability and mindset

Holder also spoke about his evolving role as a T20 specialist in recent times. The 34-year-old revealed that he has primarily focused on the shortest format over the past year and a half, which has helped him stay prepared for various match situations.

While he expressed a desire to return to Test cricket, Holder highlighted the importance of maintaining a positive mindset and delivering impactful performances in T20 cricket.

“Keeping a fresh mind, staying positive, and executing when called upon is important. I just try to make an impact whenever I get the opportunity,” he said.

Conclusion

Holder’s all-round brilliance, backed by early breakthroughs from Siraj and Rabada, underlined a strong team performance from Gujarat Titans. The victory not only boosts their playoff hopes but also showcases the depth and balance within their bowling attack as the tournament progresses.
