Lisbon: The Portuguese national football team will pay tribute to late forward Diogo Jota during its FIFA World Cup campaign by wearing special commemorative wristbands, midfielder Vitinha revealed ahead of the team’s Group K opener against DR Congo.

The tribute comes nearly a year after Jota and his brother lost their lives in a car accident in northwestern Spain, a tragedy that deeply affected Portuguese football and the wider sporting community.

The wristbands were presented to the squad by Luis Montenegro and have been specially designed to honour the memory of the former international.

Special tribute for former Portugal star

According to Vitinha, the commemorative wristbands feature the names of all members of Portugal’s current World Cup squad along with a special reference to Diogo Jota.

The players were given the choice of whether they wished to wear the wristbands during matches, and the entire squad unanimously decided to do so as a mark of respect for their former teammate.

Vitinha said the players received the gesture with great affection and viewed it as a meaningful way to honour Jota’s legacy throughout the tournament.

The wristbands were also designed to comply with match regulations, allowing players to wear them on the field during official FIFA World Cup fixtures.

Jota’s contribution remembered

Diogo Jota represented Portugal on 49 occasions and scored 14 goals during his international career. Known for his versatility, work ethic and attacking ability, he was a valued member of the national team setup.

His death sent shockwaves through the football world, with tributes pouring in from teammates, clubs, supporters and football associations across the globe.

Many members of the current Portuguese squad shared dressing rooms and memorable moments with Jota, making the tribute particularly significant for the players.

Team officials said his influence continues to be felt within the squad, both on and off the pitch.

Portugal begin World Cup campaign

Portugal will open their FIFA World Cup campaign against DR Congo on June 17 as they begin their pursuit of World Cup success.

The tribute is expected to accompany the team throughout the tournament, serving as a constant reminder of a player who made a lasting contribution to Portuguese football.

Earlier, Portugal had also honoured Jota by including his name in various commemorative initiatives connected to the national team’s World Cup preparations.

The gesture reflects the strong bond within the squad and the respect held for the former forward, whose memory remains deeply cherished by teammates and supporters alike.

Emotional gesture ahead of tournament

The decision to wear the wristbands has been widely viewed as a heartfelt tribute to a player whose career left a significant mark on Portuguese football.

As Portugal embarks on its World Cup journey, the commemorative bands will symbolise unity, remembrance and respect for a teammate whose absence continues to be felt across the football community.

For the players, the tribute is not only a remembrance of Jota’s achievements but also a reflection of the enduring relationships built through representing their country on the international stage.
