London: With the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England just weeks away, India Women are set for a crucial final preparation assignment against England Women in a three-match T20I series beginning on Thursday.
The series assumes major significance for both teams as they fine-tune combinations, assess squad depth and prepare for the global tournament scheduled to begin on June 12.
India Women enter the series with a relatively settled squad led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur, while Smriti Mandhana will serve as vice-captain. The tour is expected to provide valuable match exposure in English conditions ahead of the World Cup.
India aim to regain winning momentum
India Women have experienced mixed results in recent months despite beginning the year strongly in T20 cricket.
The team started its campaign in impressive fashion in December 2025 by registering a dominant 5-0 T20I series sweep against Sri Lanka Women at home shortly after their historic ODI World Cup triumph in November.
India followed that success with an important 2-1 T20I series victory over Australia Women, boosting confidence ahead of the upcoming World Cup.
However, momentum slowed after a disappointing 1-4 T20I series defeat against South Africa Women, exposing concerns regarding batting consistency and bowling depth under pressure.
The England series is therefore being viewed as a crucial opportunity for the Indian side to regain rhythm before the marquee ICC event.
Strong batting unit for India
India’s batting lineup features several experienced and aggressive players capable of changing the course of matches quickly.
Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, opener Shafali Verma and middle-order batter Jemimah Rodrigues are expected to play key roles at the top of the order.
Wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh, known for her attacking strokeplay, will add firepower in the finishing stages of the innings.
The middle order will heavily rely on the all-round abilities and experience of Deepti Sharma, who remains one of India’s most important players in white-ball cricket.
Attention will also be on Yastika Bhatia and Radha Yadav, both of whom are returning after injury layoffs and are expected to use the series to regain valuable match practice.
Bowlers seek consistency ahead of World Cup
India’s bowling attack will once again be led by pace bowler Renuka Singh, who remains the team’s primary new-ball weapon.
The squad also includes promising talents such as Kranti Goud and Shree Charani, adding variety and depth to the bowling department.
Young player Nandini Sharma has earned her maiden India call-up and will look to impress if given an opportunity during the series.
Team management is expected to closely monitor bowling combinations as conditions in England could play a crucial role during the World Cup.
England enter series with confidence
England Women head into the T20I series with strong momentum after securing a 2-1 home series victory against New Zealand Women.
England began that series with a seven-wicket win in Derby before suffering a 14-run defeat in the second match. However, they bounced back strongly in the deciding game at Hove by bowling New Zealand out for just 80 and comfortably chasing the target.
Left-arm spinner Linsey Smith emerged as one of England’s standout performers, claiming six wickets in the series at an impressive economy rate of 4.16. Her performances helped her rise to second place in the ICC Women’s T20I bowling rankings.
Despite their recent success, England have suffered a setback ahead of the series against India.
Captain Nat Sciver-Brunt has been ruled out due to a calf injury, creating uncertainty over her fitness before the World Cup.
However, England have received a boost with the return of experienced batter Danni Wyatt-Hodge, who missed the New Zealand series following the birth of her first child. She is expected to be available for the final two matches against India.

For India, the focus will remain on finding consistency in batting, strengthening bowling combinations and adapting quickly to English conditions.
