Sunil Chhetri, the esteemed figure in Indian football, has declared his intention to step away from international football. He is scheduled to conclude his national career during the second round of the World Cup qualifiers against Kuwait on June 6, to be held at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata.


With an impressive record of 94 goals in 150 appearances for the national team, Chhetri solidifies his position as one of the country’s greatest footballers. He currently stands as the fourth highest international goal-scorer of all time.

Chhetri took to his social media platform on a specified date to make the formal announcement through a 10-minute video, elaborating on his decision to retire from international duties.

His departure leaves a significant void in the national team, given his consistent contributions, particularly as a prolific goal-scorer. Chhetri emphasized the importance of nurturing new talent to fill the role he leaves behind, pointing out the absence of a prominent number nine in the current squad.
