Chennai: The race for the final playoff berth in the IPL 2026 season has intensified dramatically after Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) crucial five-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Monday. With three teams already securing qualification, five franchises are now locked in a fierce battle for the lone remaining spot in the top four.

SRH’s successful chase of 181 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium not only confirmed their place in the playoffs but also reshaped the qualification scenarios, leaving several teams dependent on both their own performances and other match results.

Three teams seal playoff qualification

Following the latest round of matches, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), and Gujarat Titans (GT) have officially qualified for the IPL 2026 playoffs.

RCB currently lead the table with 18 points from 13 matches, while SRH and GT have accumulated 16 points each from 13 games. Importantly, the maximum number of points that any of the remaining contenders can reach is 16, ensuring that these three teams cannot be overtaken.

SRH still have one league match left, giving them a chance to improve their standing and possibly secure a top-two finish, which offers a crucial advantage in the playoff structure.

Five teams in contention for final spot

With Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants eliminated from the playoff race, attention now turns to five teams still mathematically in contention for the fourth spot.

Punjab Kings (PBKS), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), and Delhi Capitals (DC) each have only one match remaining. PBKS sit on 13 points, while CSK and DC have 12 points each. For these teams, the equation is straightforward but challenging — they must win their final games and rely on favourable outcomes in other fixtures.

Rajasthan Royals (RR), currently on 12 points from 12 matches, are in a slightly stronger position as they have two games left. They are the only side among the chasing pack capable of reaching 16 points, which could guarantee qualification if they win both matches.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), with 11 points from 12 games, also have two matches remaining but can only reach a maximum of 15 points. This puts them at a disadvantage, as their qualification would depend heavily on net run rate and other results.

SRH victory proves decisive

The turning point in the playoff race came with SRH’s composed chase against CSK in Chennai. Ishan Kishan led the charge with a fluent 70 off 47 balls, while Heinrich Klaasen provided vital support with a quickfire 47 off 26 deliveries.

The duo added 75 runs for the third wicket, stabilising the innings after early pressure and setting up a controlled chase. SRH eventually reached 181 for five in 19 overs, comfortably sealing victory.

Earlier, SRH captain Pat Cummins played a key role with the ball, picking up three wickets for 28 runs and restricting CSK to a competitive but chaseable total.

CSK remain in hunt despite setback

Despite the defeat, CSK are not entirely out of contention. With 12 points from 13 matches, they still have a mathematical chance of qualifying. However, their path is complicated and depends on multiple results going their way.

They must win their final league game and hope that other contenders fail to reach or surpass their points tally. Net run rate could also play a decisive role if multiple teams finish on the same number of points.

Net run rate likely to play crucial role

As the league stage nears its conclusion, net run rate (NRR) is expected to be a key factor in determining the final standings. With several teams potentially finishing on 14 or 16 points, even small margins in upcoming matches could have significant implications.

Teams like Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and CSK will not only need victories but also convincing ones to boost their NRR and strengthen their chances.

Rajasthan Royals, given their two remaining fixtures, have the opportunity to control their own destiny. Wins in both matches would take them to 16 points, potentially sealing qualification without relying on other outcomes.

High-stakes finish to league stage

The IPL 2026 league phase is heading towards a thrilling conclusion, with every remaining match carrying playoff implications. Teams will be under immense pressure to deliver, knowing that even a single mistake could end their campaign.

For fans, the coming days promise edge-of-the-seat action as the battle for the final playoff spot unfolds. With multiple teams still in contention and scenarios changing rapidly, the race to the top four remains wide open.

As things stand, three teams have secured their places, but the identity of the fourth playoff entrant will only be decided in the final round of league matches.
