Ahmedabad: Shubman Gill-led Gujarat Titans (GT) have all but sealed a place in the IPL 2026 playoffs after a commanding 82-run victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Tuesday, a result that has significantly reshaped the qualification probabilities for multiple teams, including Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
With the win, Gujarat Titans surged to 16 points from 12 matches — widely regarded as the benchmark for playoff qualification in the Indian Premier League. According to official broadcast projections, GT’s chances of making the playoffs have skyrocketed to 94.9 per cent, placing them firmly in control of their destiny with just two league games remaining.
Playoff race tightens as probabilities shift
The result has had a ripple effect across the points table. Sunrisers Hyderabad, who were in a strong position before the match, saw their qualification probability drop sharply from 80 per cent to 65.7 per cent following the heavy defeat.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru also experienced a marginal setback, with their chances dipping from 80.1 per cent to 79.7 per cent. While the drop appears small, it reflects the increasingly competitive mid-table scenario where even slight fluctuations in net run rate and results can prove decisive.
Punjab Kings, currently placed fourth, saw a minor improvement in their qualification chances, rising from 62.5 per cent to 62.7 per cent. Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings registered a slight uptick from 42.7 per cent to 42.8 per cent, keeping their hopes alive in what remains a tightly contested race for the final playoff spots.
With several teams still mathematically in contention, the coming fixtures are expected to play a crucial role in determining the final four.
Gujarat Titans dominate with all-round brilliance
On the field, Gujarat Titans delivered a clinical performance to outclass SRH in all departments. Batting first on a tricky two-paced surface, GT posted a competitive total of 168 for seven, thanks to half-centuries from Sai Sudharsan and Washington Sundar.
Sai Sudharsan anchored the innings with a composed 61 off 44 balls, striking five fours and two sixes. His knock was crucial in stabilising the innings after early hiccups. Washington Sundar complemented him well with a fluent 50 off 33 deliveries, laced with seven boundaries and a six, as the duo stitched together a vital 60-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
Despite disciplined bowling from SRH, particularly Praful Hinge who returned figures of 2 for 17 in his three overs, Gujarat Titans managed to put up a fighting total on a surface that had earlier proven difficult for batters.
Rabada and Holder dismantle SRH batting
In response, Sunrisers Hyderabad crumbled under relentless pressure from Gujarat’s pace attack. Chasing 169, SRH were bundled out for just 86 in 14.5 overs, registering one of their heaviest defeats of the season.
Kagiso Rabada led the charge with the ball, picking up three crucial wickets for 28 runs. His incisive spell with the new ball dismantled SRH’s top order, leaving them struggling at 32 for four inside the powerplay.
Mohammed Siraj set the tone early with a wicket-maiden, removing Travis Head, while Rabada followed up with wickets of Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan, exploiting movement and bounce on the surface.
Jason Holder then tightened the screws in the middle overs, claiming three wickets for 20 runs. His clever variations and ability to extract extra bounce proved too much for the SRH batters, who failed to build any meaningful partnerships.
Prasidh Krishna also chipped in with two wickets, ensuring there was no respite for the struggling SRH lineup.
SRH batting collapse exposes vulnerabilities
Sunrisers Hyderabad’s batting unit failed to cope with the challenging conditions and disciplined bowling. Heinrich Klaasen and Nitish Kumar Reddy both fell while attempting to accelerate, while skipper Pat Cummins’ 19 was the highest individual score of the innings.
The collapse highlighted SRH’s over-reliance on their top order, which failed to fire under pressure. The team lost wickets at regular intervals and never looked in contention during the chase.
Conclusion: GT in control as playoff battle intensifies
With this emphatic victory, Gujarat Titans have taken a giant stride towards securing a playoff berth, needing just one more favourable result to confirm qualification. Their balanced squad and consistent performances make them strong contenders for a top-two finish.
Meanwhile, the race for the remaining playoff spots is heating up, with teams like RCB, SRH, Punjab Kings, and CSK locked in a tight battle. With margins becoming increasingly fine, every match from here on carries immense significance.
As the league stage approaches its climax, fans can expect a thrilling finish with multiple teams still in the hunt for IPL 2026 glory.
