The controversy surrounding the venue selection for the 2026 Indian Premier League final has intensified after the IPL chairman publicly explained why Ahmedabad was chosen over Bengaluru.
Fans, especially supporters in Karnataka, have expressed disappointment and anger after Ahmedabad was once again awarded the tournament final despite strong expectations surrounding Bengaluru’s chances of hosting the marquee clash.
Chairman cites convenience and logistics
Responding to criticism, IPL officials reportedly said the decision was taken keeping “convenience” and logistical planning in mind.
Though detailed reasons were not fully disclosed, organisers indicated that infrastructure readiness, scheduling coordination, crowd management, and operational considerations played a major role in finalising the venue.
The statement has, however, done little to calm frustrated fans, many of whom questioned why M. Chinnaswamy Stadium was overlooked despite Bengaluru’s strong cricket culture and passionate fan base.
Fans express frustration online
Social media platforms were flooded with reactions from cricket supporters upset over Ahmedabad repeatedly hosting major IPL matches, including finals and playoff games.
Many fans argued that Bengaluru has consistently delivered strong attendance, atmosphere, and fan engagement during IPL seasons.
Some users also questioned whether venue selections are becoming overly concentrated around a few cities instead of rotating across major cricket centres in India.
Debate over IPL venue selection continues
The issue has sparked wider discussions about transparency in venue allocation and whether factors beyond cricket infrastructure influence such decisions.
Cricket analysts noted that hosting an IPL final carries major prestige, tourism benefits, and commercial value for any city.
Despite the criticism, Ahmedabad remains set to host the final, while Bengaluru fans continue hoping the city will secure future playoff and championship matches.
